View Full Version : What size is your webhost site layout?
Icene 01-20-2005, 09:12 AM the topic name asks it all...
whats the best size do u guys reckon for it to fit on a page, or to look properly... this is for a 1024x768
regards
S-Comm 01-20-2005, 09:32 AM I think since most computers use 800x600 and 1024x768 you need to setup your layout to suit all. A lot of designers prefer 800x600 since it suits both kinds of users.
Another solution is using widths by percent. e.g. width=100% to fit on a user page exactly. but it has cons too.
the_pm 01-20-2005, 09:44 AM What size is you browser window? 1024x768? 800x600? 1600x1200? 748x962 (it's a browser window - it can be any size)? Whatever size you prefer to see when you surf the Web, that's the size of my layout :)
Icene 01-20-2005, 10:13 AM yea guys but i mean what size wud u do the layout in Photoshop

Going along with fluid design plan, the answer would be that you use a canvas as big or as small as you need to fit everything onto it. When you go to strategically crop it, it won't matter what size canvas you used anyway.
However, if you're talking about creating a fixed site where you export Photoshop code and just drop text into the middle *shudder*, well, I'd say you'd do well to not go any larger than 760px or so. The larger you go, the more people will be inconvenienced by your choice, but go too small and your site will turn into a bacon strip.
Icene 01-20-2005, 11:47 AM great thanks 760 width and what height?
or the other way arnd?
saghir69 01-20-2005, 12:00 PM i just do 100% for all my sites, so they fit properly in most screen resulutions. is that a bad idea?
the_pm 01-20-2005, 12:00 PM Again, large enough to fit whatever you need to fit onto the screen. If that means 100px high, then that's it. If it means 1000px high, then use that. I would suggest starting your canvas larger than you think you'll need it to be. You can always crop it down later.
i just do 100% for all my sites, so they fit properly in most screen resulutions. is that a bad idea? No, that is a very, very good idea, but I get the impression OP is not interested in going this route or is not versed in the fluid-design school of thought.
MegaHosters 01-20-2005, 12:10 PM 779 Pixels is the most we ever go with a design. Simply because that is the widest you can fit on a persons browser who is using 800x600 resolution. 779 will give room for the vertical scroll bar without creating a awful horizontal scroll.
As far as height it is up to you... People are used to scrolling vertically but it is always good to keep your important information ABOVE the scroll line so people see it up front.
Hope this helps.

The Enigma 01-20-2005, 04:22 PM i would suggest one that can vary meaning, a small header with a nice background color or image, that is good, because then if the layout is centered then the table won't change only the background will, causing it to change to most monitor sizes
layer0 01-20-2005, 09:46 PM The exact fit for me is Width: 779 px and Height: x px
x = whatever you wish
peynir 01-20-2005, 11:07 PM Suggest view with the 1024x768, but also ok with 800x600
pixelvibe 01-20-2005, 11:17 PM I usually go 770 just for the safe side. If the window is at full size, but not maximized (yeah, it fills the entire space, but its in restored mode), the max resolution is actually just a few pixels smaller than 779.
a little below 779 is just perfect
< ! -- 01-22-2005, 03:34 PM 740-750 width is safest
height 450+
