View Full Version : How much space/transfer do I need to host 25-50 webmail accounts?

I've been thinking about setting up a small email service for friends and family, about 25-50 accounts. But how much space and transfer would I need? I know it all depends on how they use it, but I'm looking for some estimates.

oh, and another question: when you set up a POP3 account in Outlook - do the users download the messages from the server when they check their mail? Or is it still taking up space?

thx,

Hiya,

I don't know so much about Outlook but in Eudora you can configure whether you want your mail to have still stored on the server. If Outlook offers same functionality the user can leave their mail theoretically on the server and just download a copy of it.

The default setting in Outlook/Outlook Express is to download and then delete the e-mail from the account.

Yes, there is a setting called "leave copy on server", under "Advanced" properties.

Thx, both of you!

Well, as long as the default is set to download and erase I'm happy. :)

100 MB of space and 1 GB of transfer is probably more than enough for 50 e-mail accounts.

www.bigemailbox.com is down. Would like to have had a look at it myself to see what they actually offer.

I know of BigMailbox...;)

But the reason I want to set up these accounts is to let these people abandon their accounts with Yahoo, hotmail, etc.
