View Full Version : Why unlimited?
Sain Cai 02-19-2002, 01:39 AM There maybe a thread on this, but I am too lazy to do a search, and too tired :D
Anyway, I know unlimited is non-existant in webhosting, but how can advertising this be legal?
I haven't actually looked into an unlimited space/bw provider in detail (ie, TOS) but wouldn't this be classified as False Advertisement?
21inchguns 02-19-2002, 01:43 AM it should be illegal!!!
Mauler 02-19-2002, 03:25 AM Because it draws people in and 95% won't use the amount of "unlimited" bandwidth in the TOS.

Which in turn leaves 5-10% of all of their customers completely pished off when their account gets cut off, they then come on here and complain and go to a better host. (as per advertising forum)
Id say WHT is here alot for people that have used one hosting firm, got cut off or been unhappy, they have done a search to dig up more dirt on a company and stumbled across WHT.

The question wasn't, "Why do hosts feature this?" It is...

I should think so as well. It baffles me as to why it isn't illegal.
Martie 02-19-2002, 11:26 AM Arrrgh!! The old phrase:

Arrrgh!! The old phrase:
cheap marketing ploy
comes to mind! The problem is; it's a marketing ploy that works.
I remember, while looking for my third host, stumbling across someone that offered "Unlimited."
Being my usual uneducated self, I thought it the perfect solution.
No worries about bandwidth limitations.
Needless to say; I no longer have a site there.
But, until the public is educated on this or someone has successfully challenged the phrase, it will remain.

LOL!! It sure does work..and I keep saying people are finally getting educated about hosting, but still, look around..there are still TONS of hosts that use that trick (and a few others) but people still fallll for it...:(
Sain Cai 02-19-2002, 12:00 PM Personally I think they should outlaw the word "Unlimited" and replace it with "Conditional".
Unless you will truely offer unlimited:rolleyes: , it seems there is always a condition.
checkall 02-19-2002, 08:18 PM Unlimited web space and data transfer are jokes. Stay away from those hosts using the trick!
Mester 02-19-2002, 08:20 PM My first host was good for 2gigs/month.
My second host was great for unlimited
My third host (unlimited) cut me off for using 7gb/month
My fourth host (unlimited) charged $1/gig over 5gigs so I cancelled them and didnt pay.
Of those 4, I am still with the second host, they are great! As for the other two, I hope they both go bankrupt for sucking me in like that
Its called Fraud by Desception, basically meaning that you are ripping someone off by promising them one thing, then doing another. Hosting companies have been able to get around this because they hide clauses in their Terms of Service, TOS, agreements.
Right now, the hosting industry is too new for these companies to be brought up in court, but as time goes on we should see a turn around. Another thing is that these companies threaten to sue me, for a site...lol chicken:D, but never follow through. I know why they never follow through on legal action because if brought before a court their Unlimited wont stand. Not many judges understand fiber optic connections, or the internet for that matter :)
Hope this helps alittle.
