How often are dropped domains picked up by some random company to make a search site? You know how you sometimes go to a site that has had the registration drop and now it has ads for some company?
Basically, I'm thinking of letting the registration on one of my domains drop, and I'm wondering if there is any way I might b able to reregister/purchase it at a later date.
Thanks.

You shouldn't risk with your domain name, if you really need it. If domain name is popular, parking it with sedo.us will cover the renewal fee.

if you're likely to want it in the future, for the few $ you're much better just to renew it
If you're not using it , parking it with one of those "search engines" like sedo et al can recoup some of the costs
Most domains that are of any use get grabbed - either to profit from residual traffic, or for use/resale by someone.

i agree you should renew... those search engine sites really only want the hi traffic names (even odd names), so if yours is popular, keep it.
and if it's very important to you, keep it. don't risk a one of a kind where everyone in the entire world has access to it.

Ah! I always thought those companies bought those domains as opposed to the person choosing to host the search site.
That's a good idea, thanks.
