View Full Version : And the winner is....(?)
Alex Ramirez 01-19-2005, 01:21 PM Hi. I know this may be "the" question you all hate, but I've been digging in the fora, and still have many doubts. I'm new to VPS, reseller and dedicated, but hate my current cheap providers for shared hosting, and hence will switch, to handle my own websited in better conditions.
The Q is then this: which one to use?
site5.com
hostgator.com
servint.com (VPS and *not* reseller-like?)
If they're all good, then I guess is just a choice between good/great companies, but I'd love to make sure they're all that good, before choosing either.
Any other one I should consider besides these 3?
Thanks in advance !
Hamtramck Rick 01-19-2005, 02:07 PM I have been with dathorn.com for 6 months. They are really dependable and have a business model that I think will keep them in business for years. Also, you get a lot for your money, but not too much. Support has been great. I get a reply to an issue in 15 minutes. It is solved within an hour. That has been my experience. I use it for my "high quality" hosting needs.
I would suggest searching around the forum. You will find lots of feedback on WHT to make your final decision.
markjut 01-19-2005, 04:09 PM They are all good companies, so it depends on your personal choice
jiarby 01-20-2005, 03:44 AM Kualo.com has VPS plans, I just signed there and had excellent support from Craig Luke. Before you sign up with someone give him a phone call & see if he can help you.
Now I just have to fire Network Solutions!!! (save for another thread)

RossMAN 01-20-2005, 03:51 AM Alex,
After reading your other thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=365648) I would suggest a ServInt.net VPS (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=343960)
Also SEARCH (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s=) for reviews of VPSColo their support is VERY fast, friendly and helpful from personal first hand experience.
Good job researching prospective web hosts :)
Alex Ramirez 01-20-2005, 06:50 AM Thank you all.
Now.... Any clues on "figures"? :-)
My current site (my personal hobby, cinenganos.com) eats 30 GB/month -transfer- at its peaks. Tops of 6000 visits/day.
It uses MySQL and PHP for all the site (the forum as well, brand new, never too active to be taken seriously in terms of extra load).
Space needed: less than 1 GB for this one (both htdocs,cgi-bin, and MySQL DB)
Any help on the server needed? For this, I guess a celeron would do, but If I create personal websites for my wife, myself, and etc., and add them together with other low traffioc sites, the needs will be "bigger" and I'm not sure if a celeron will do, if Pentium IV is too much, and that stuff...
Also, I'm aware 512 MB RAM is not as good as 1 GB, but in terms of php and MySQL, with no image processing and being mainly simple readDB/print scripts, I'm not sure on the RAM needs...
Thanks in advance!
Yaroslav 01-25-2005, 05:51 AM I'd say Dathorn.com would satisfy your needs quite well. They have hosting plans suitable for you, their hardware is good, and overall performance/response rocks. I won't say there are no problems - there is no such host - but I'll say they REACT, and that's good. I can second that the average resolution time is about 1 hour.
Also, they're located at The Planet, which is known to have good network.

Will they receive an oscar?

Actually, one of my clients is named 'Oscar', so i guess they *will* receive one, at least...
And getting again serious: ServInt has my vote as of now... the BW figures are better than others for the same price.
the only thing I hesitate is that VPS, or reseller, are again some sort of "shared" space, right? and then I fear facing the same fight for resources as in shared-hosting...
I know VPS software handles that, that resources are well handled, much better than in a shared environment, but I'd need to confirm if VPs or reseller-like do actually feel like a small version of a dedicated, insteda of as a larger version of a shared...
jmweb 01-25-2005, 06:49 PM Your the winner because you picked 3 of our competitors whom do a pretty good job.

Are you actually after the functionality provided by a VPS environment or are you just looking to get the most power for your buck? Although VPS systems often handle resource limitations for each virtual server, you're not guaranteed to get a faster/more powerful hosting environment just because you're in a VPS. A well-managed reseller or shared provider can provide performance equal to or even better than a VPS. It's just a matter of making sure the host isn't filling the server to the brim with accounts. ;)
Best of luck!
Matt
Website Rob 01-26-2005, 03:16 AM You are a bit off the mark, Alex, in that, a VPS requires more time, effort, and management on your part then a Reseller or Shared Hosting account would. With a VPS you must still do Server management; security, troubleshooting, etc. Although a good step towards getting your own Server, if you are not ready to work a lot in Shell, know very well the OS you are working with, and constantly maintain resources for all 'your' accounts, it would not be a good move for you at this time.
Also, a VPS is a Server within a Server and as such, you have more resources but are still in Shared environment as far as over-all Server resources go. In fact, the only way to get away from a Shared environment is to have a Server all to yourself.
If you just want to focus on managing a few accounts and leave Server management to someone else, a Reseller account would probably be better for your current needs. You say that you "hate my current cheap providers for shared hosting" but what is cheap?
Some rule-of-thumb guidelines to go by, but perhaps a somewhat biased opinion. :)
Under .50 cents a GB for Data transfer is mostly considered cheap and somewhat unreliable.
Between .50 cents and $1.00 a GB for Data transfer is mostly considered inexpensive and pretty reliable.
Over $1.00 a GB means you should getting a First Class treatment in all regards for your Hosting account.
Alex Ramirez 01-26-2005, 03:24 AM Thank you all. I need to be able to handle some domains on my own, hence I need the VPS. Even wherm I'm used to shared, and my experience is on that, I know Unix and the basics for sys admin, and I will give it a try.
My current hosting is powweb.com (waaaaaaaay too cheap!, less than 8 dollars a month for 150 GB transfer, being it 5/day), but switching to another more expensive shared will be the same as handling my own VPs or reseller.
ServInt actually provides a bit of managed services, so I guess I will give it a try.
Thanks again...
Taylor 01-26-2005, 03:26 AM Good Luck with your VPS route and new host, ServInt is a good company. You should be in good hands
hobbzilla 01-26-2005, 12:01 PM I have a servint accoung and have overall been pleased. Unfortunately my VPS suffered a drive array failure and was offline for a good 7+ consecutive hours.. I think they mentioned something about a some sort of refund.. which even if it comes out to a free month (doubtfull) I still lost MANY times that in loss of sales... I understand that computers and servers can and will fail.. but 7 consecutive hours has my eyebrow raised... I think for my next project I am going to give Site5 a try... I will see how they do.. (this will make my 6th host I've used. ServInt still being the best so far -- all things considered). Their amount of managed services are a very nice plus.. and I have found their support to be very fast.. however still e-mail based vs. ticket based.
Matt Lightner 01-26-2005, 02:16 PM Hi Hobbzilla,
Sorry to hear about your experience--I know that can be frustrating!
Thanks for selecting Site5 for your next project. Hopefully there won't be a 7th host! :D
Matt
ldcdc 01-26-2005, 06:36 PM I still lost MANY times that in loss of sales...This might sound tough, but everyone should remember that a hosting company is not an insurance company, so they can't be expected to act like one.
That said, I hope hobbzilla will get the promised refund in a timely manner.
