Google has just released version 2 of their Picasa photo organizing software. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should. It's very slick.

When Google purchased Picasa last year it seemed to me to be a very strange move. How could people having more organized photo collections on their home computers benefit the world's smartest search engine?

I have finally come across the answer:
(from http://www.picasa.com/features/features-edit.php )
"Write captions that stay with the picture.
Picasa 2 makes captions the way journalists do – using the IPTC standard. That means your captions are saved within their pictures and stay with them, whether you export as a web page, make a CD presentation, or share them using Hello. Picasa captions are fully editable and searchable, and you choose whether to display them or not."

Do you see it? By getting the world to use Picasa and organize their photos, Google is also getting them to encode the photo captions and keywords into the image file - thus making photos searchable!

Man those guys are smart! What an elegant solution to a troublesome search problem.

Wow - I love the Picasa function to backup my pictures to DVD!

I just went through the process and it is very slick. It even puts a restore program on the DVD that autoruns when you insert the disc!

Backing up all my digicam photos is something I have been meaning to do for a very long time.
