I haven been reading RedHat 7.2 manuals and reference guides getting familiar more with the OS because I haven't used it in a long time.
My question is what is the best alternate choice besides Cobalt Raq to host some sites... Small 40-60 sites. I currently run Cobalt RAQ 4 and I would like to do more than it gives. I also don't want to mess up the GUI by changing things manually.
I looked at these two models because of price-wise:
PowerEdge 1550 (by Dell) Details (http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/products/model_pedge_pedge_1550.htm)
Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Server - Model 10 Details (http://www.smb.compaq.com/dstore/default.asp?page=ctoBases&ProductLineId=431&Family_Id=866)
I am looking into installing RH 7.2 (server) and use Plesk as a control panel. I wanted to know if anyone out there has any of the 2 servers mentioned above and how they like them.
I would also like to include MySQL, and maybe Interchange by RedHat for e-commerce/shops. I understand the more stuff you add the more you have to worry and update.
I think by installing RH 7.2 (server) no GUI or un-necessary packages should be up to date and maybe not worry as much / update as much as Cobalt RAQ.
Any suggestions or inputs is appreciated.

I'm running Dell 1550s with Plesk... it's a sweetheart of a setup. Just remember: If you buy a 1550, order it with the minimum amount of RAM from Dell and buy as much memory as you need from Crucial.com (Crucial.com actually has a Dell 1550 option in their "Which RAM Do I Need?" wizard). You will save hundreds.

Thanks for the info. I also noticed that people voted to Compaq also but no reason why.
Although I did notice Compaq being less expensive but Dell more expandable for later usage in CPU speed, RAM and few other things.
I just saw a ad right now on ENSIM panel. But after reading few posts I'll stick with Plesk. Less time to install and easy to uninstall.
Thanks...

PS. One more thing... If I get this and load it fully with 500mb of ram and not end up using it for co-locate I wonder how it will hold UP USING it for few months in the house to replace an older Pentium II 450mhz PC I have...
I mean I need a new computer why not buy the Dell and use it for graphics suite or something till I can get the Cobalt Contract over and co-locate my server... this way I can learn play and poke at it... run it on my DHCP Cable modem ( I get more speed upload on my cable) than I do on my co-location...

In my opinion. Dell PowerApps and all that stuff is way too overrated.
Honestly the true 'network appliance' i know is a raq server but even still i dont really like raqs, ive had my fair share of raqs alright but their control panles some times go berserk for absolutely no reason. it just gets very annoying ;)
if you want a real powerhouse of a machine, get a whitebox and dump plesk on it.
just my 0.02
regards,
asher.
I have a dell computer, use to have dell and raq servers. Never used Compaq. My vote has to go with dell, because i have never had any problems with them.
Also, tech support is good with a dell.

The Dell 1550 is a nice box. I will do the job all day long.
The Compaq box is good to. If your only doing 40-60 sites and that's it the Compaq may be your best bet for the money.

-as you can see, no strong feelings one way or the other ;)

Looks like Dell has discontinued the 1550 and replaced it with the 1560... options for dual power supplies and (if I read this right) a built-in RAID controller. Such a deal--RAID cards cost a bundle!

Of those two I'd vote for Dell. Decent performance and quality.
You might also consider IBM which are also excellent. Or build your own.
For that number of sites almost any of them would do, even the RAQ unless they require a lot of script processing.
I don't know how important support is to you, but I stumbled on http://www.storeanywhere.com the otherday and was blown away by their prices. Dual 1Ghz P3's, Tyan mobo, 512MB ram.. 60G, dual ethernet..... $1499 ! They're obviously cutting corners somewhere, probably little or no support, but if you're an experienced sysadmin it might not matter to you. Unfortunately resellerratings.com has been discontinued and I can't seem to find any information about them or opinions of them. Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there..
