View Full Version : Domain Hijack

A domain I owned seems to have been hijacked, and I am trying to see what I can do to get it back. The domain in question is a trademark (registration pending), and has been used in commerce since 2001...though I am not sure how this happened, because the domain was "locked" and no transfer requests were received.

Whoever took the domain, which would have expired May of this year, is using a hidden whois. Any help would be much appreciated.

Contact the registrar it is at now (and previous registrar if it was transferred away) and let them know the domain was hijacked. Continue from there. As a last resort if the domain is trademarked, you can always use UDRP to get the domain back if they are infringing your TM rights; but hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Is it okay to post the name at all domain forums so people can be
made aware of this?

By hijacked, do you mean it's been transferred away from where
you currently manage it to another registrar?

are you positive this was not part of a udrp settlement that you registrar was required to do?

Yes, the domain was registered and current (not expired), and before it did expire, it was moved onto another registrar without my knowledge or authorization.

As far as this being a udrp settlement against me, no, why would it? If it was I would have expected to have been contacted by at least my registrar...however we owned the domain, all the whois info was properly filled out and it was pointing to an active ecommerce website.

Would you mind posting the domain if this is allowed?

I would rather not post the domain publicly at this point.

Who's the new and old registrar?

In alleged domain hijacking cases, only the registrar where it was
last with can possibly help you, aside from retaining legal services.

The problem here is to somehow prove a hijacking indeed took
place.

One possibility how the name got transferred without your know:
it might have been transferred to a registrar that requires only
fax authorization. If you can post who the new registrar is, it can
help answer that question.

Do you know how it was hijacked? I recently had two hijacked because someone compromised my hotmail account to do it. I contacted my registrar as soon as I found out and they locked the two domains from both me and the hijacker. It ended up being about a week to get control of my hotmail account and the domains back in my name. Very tense times, but if you work on it it can be done :)

it's a good idea to use the secure login option of email accounts.

yahoo and gmail make it easy to login securely ( httpS )

What does the secure thing do?

I guess I got lucky :) They responded fairly quick to say they had denied access to both them and me. Once they responded I gave them extra info than I had in the original ticket. Being in a different country to the hijacker was probably quite helpful to them also :)

secure login reduces the risk of having your password intercepted, because it is encrypted between your pc and the server. not on them, but between them.
