We've had a number of people ask us when they can pre-register, but I'm not sure yet how widely they will be adopted.
I suspect the first "landrush" will be large, but afterward they will join the ranks of biz and info as a distant cousin of com.

Not too sure how popular .us will be once all the flag waving starts slowing down. Country extensions are a tough sell.

I think that .us domains were much more useful when each town had one, like...
town.state.us
Schools could have k12.town.state.us, and individuals and organizations could have blah.town.state.us, all for free. But now, as I understand it, you'll have to pay, and the domains won't correspond to the site's geographical location.
Basically, this will be useful to two types of people. One, the megacorps who register their company name in every TLD, and the people who will make puns out of .us, so they can have give.us/money.

The split domains have been pretty much a joke.
I know it hasn't been long since they have been out, but people thing .COM when they think the internet.
