i'd like to build a site like friendsters...any idea what program can be used to run it?

PHP and MYSQL on a unix server is fine for a site like that.

but is there a software that can run such site?

like we use oscommerce for online stores..etc?

osCommerce is software written in PHP and MySQL. Well, actually just PHP, MySQL is the database used to store information.

I doubt you can find a free one for it.

There are no existing open source applications or products which have been built to emulate the services like Friendster. Most people who have created it, kept it for themselves for the purposes of running their own community. You will need to create your own product if you want to launch something like that.

First I want to say - if you want to have personal business and earn some money - OS products are not the best solutions. I don't want to talk about OSCommerce, but I know, many people ask to write personal application, though they know about OSC.

Yes, the better solution for you will be to write personal application. Maybe you can write some modifications for existing dating scripts, but I think, in near future, if your site will grow, you'll need to rewrite it from scratch. So, everything depends on the scale of your ideas - if it's just came idea like "I want to create friendster type site and earn money" then try OS, but if you are serious about it - you need to think more fully about it, write project survey, and find team, who can do it.
