Hi there.
I'm new to the formum but have been a freelance designer fro a couple of years. Having got some governmental contracts over the last year i've now been asked to provide hosting for a reasonable number of small websites and need to set upa resller account. The best deal that I have seen would appear to froma company call fasthosts who seem to advertise very heavilly and offer an unlimitted hosting deal at £50 a month which would be ideal for what we want. my questions are
a) why can't i find any mention of them on here?
b) are they any good?
c) has anyone had their service cut off by them as their usage policy is unlimitted but they do havea rather vague High Usage clause that suggest that it's maybe not as unlimmited as they state.
I am unfortunaely rather limitted by my clients budgets for this particular project and do need a host that could handle at least 500 meg of server space and 30 gig transfer a month for around the £50/month mark. If these guys are no go can anyone suggest a suitable alternative (UK based only and transacted in £ Sterling)
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
Andrew

I'm sure I won't be the first to say this, but be very wary of any company that offers "unlimited" transfer. Bandwidth is the ultimate killer.

Andy,
Although as a competitor, I wouldn't normally comment, but after having used FastHosts a long time ago, and reading other people's experiences of them here, I can strongly recommend you look elsewhere - they are fraudulent in their unlimited offerings, and will cut you off when you start using a couple of Gb of transfer.
The same applies to DonHost, whom you may have heard of too.
I recommend that you look at :

and

All of these are highly commendable.

Thanks for the tips guys! I have quized fasthosts sales in depth and decided not to progress with them as they would pin down there usage policy and gave an example of using too many resources of ringing tech support too much..not the way forward I think :)
I'll continue to trawl through the option and post if i get one that really fits the bill.
All the bets and thanks for the advice

LOL!
I thought I had heard most about Fasthosts, that I would never be surprised again hearing someone's complaint story, but this one sure takes the prize .

Anyone who offers unlimited bandwidth is lying. It simply isn't true. They can't afford for you to actually use unlimited bandwidth and they will charge you obscene fees if your sites make it into the top 10% percent of their sites, or something along those lines. I experienced this a long time ago with Simplenet and *****, both of whom claimed unlimited bandwidth and then slapped me with mega charges. Don't believe claims of unlimited bandwidth. They simply aren't true.

hi guys.
Having looked at all the options the best fit for my particular application seems to be Splashhost. Despite sending a series of annoyingly long questions virtually all day the man behind splash-hsot, Alan, has got back to me within 10 minutes of each email been very helpful and generally the opposite of fasthosts. I am aware he's had a few probs of late with someone doing DOS attacks but that could happen to any host and as soon as these are sorted i'll be going with him. As an ethical guy i'm all for passing the word on when someone plays witha straight bat and not averse to telling how it is when companies act unethically..on which note..forgot to mention regarding our chums at fasthosts..not only did they come out with silly examples of potential AUP violations, they also refused point blank to reveal the names of any managers or directors and revealed that their "dedicated" hosting plan on unix has a bandwidth limit of 5 gig/month!! They then of course denied that that meant the "unlimited" policy was less than 5 gig but the "unlimited" is at £50 a month and the basic unix server is at £79 so i guess it doesn't take a genius to guess that at best the unlimitted is around 10 gig max..a very very lucky escape thanks to your advice people ;-)
thanks for all the advice and help and hope to see more of the board in future
cheers
Andrew
