Odd thing is we have TWO servers, one dead and one not. Rack power failure? clocker1996 02-15-2002, 05:35 PM yeah one server on 208.38.138.* is down the other on 216.139.227.* is up StephenRS 02-15-2002, 05:36 PM We do monitoring every 0.5 seconds, our server dead at exactly 01:03:05pm PST. clocker1996 02-15-2002, 05:36 PM this isnt the first time either =\ it was down like a week ago clocker1996 02-15-2002, 05:39 PM stephen check your PM dektong 02-15-2002, 05:40 PM as of 4:40pm EST, my server is up; I can SSH into the server and things seem to be OK ... cheers, StephenRS 02-15-2002, 05:50 PM Still down, and Weinbar e-mail support hasn't responded to me yet (I emailed them before posting here). odd thing: 216.139.227.118 down 216.139.227.165 up That's why I'm wondering if it is a switch / rack (power). StephenRS 02-15-2002, 06:12 PM Our server was back online at 01:49:36PM PST. Server never lost power, so must have been network issue (switch / router?). MSW 02-15-2002, 06:25 PM Power was never lost to anyones servers. There was a switch that died. We replaced it and now everything is working fine, just as it was. Stephen, you are correct with your assumptions! Again, network was not down, servers were not down, switch was a problem and replaced. clocker1996 02-15-2002, 07:02 PM *sigh* ok thanks.... StephenRS 02-15-2002, 07:51 PM Thanks for the report. Time to route users back to Weinbar... RackMy.com 02-15-2002, 08:13 PM StephenRS, I hope you don't do that load balancing by hand? StephenRS 02-15-2002, 10:08 PM RackMy.com .... Not sure what you mean by "load balancing by hand." I don't hand type in data for replication, if that is what you mean... :) I do make a decision on when to close one site down from the pool. This is a "manual" decision and I throw manual "switches." This "manual decision" is based on automated paging systems and other factors. I'm not sure what your question is asking... RackMy.com 02-15-2002, 11:00 PM I have read that you GLB an esnipe site and was wondering if you do it my hand using DNS manipulations. I was wondering how you did your GLB. Make sense? StephenRS 02-15-2002, 11:28 PM We are always improving things, we are hard at work on our 2nd generation systems right now. So it would be very lengthy/time consuming to explain all of it. Most of the technology is very simple. The key thing is that we fully replicate, all of our 3 sites have full copies of the data - replicate every 2 minutes. As for how we manage what traffic goes where -- we are just starting to automate that, it has mostly been manual (via web pages)... Automated failover logic can be very difficult... I still like to keep my hands on the switches. I like to "beat the bush" and find out what is really going on at one of our sites before we put traffic back on it. It is hard to program an automated system to know the difference between a "one time" outage from a ongoing issue. Examples: 1) Weinbar today having a switch fail that they replaced, not likely to fail again in a few hours. Now that I know what happened, I can reasonably assume that the problem is behind us. 2) Code Red virus. This causes all kinds of network delays, some of our ISP's did a better job managing the impact than others. Plus, who knew when it was going to hit next? Should we failover just because there have been 5 minutes of delays? (To clarify - automated failover is pretty easy, it is knowing when to go _back_ to a site that takes human invovement. The old "burned once, shame on you, burned twice, shame on me" issue. These problems get really messy when you have lost TWO of your three sites.) I could go on and on, but I have to get back to other tasks. MSW 02-16-2002, 03:13 PM Hi Folks. Listen. I want to be the first to apologize to everyone who has been inconvenienced by the sudden change of events. We are growing, and we are doig so at a very nice rate. In doing so, we needed to move to a different location, mostly because the datacenter that we were in went bankrupt and we didn't want to lose any customers. Our support staff has been working overtime to help you through your issues. If they haven't gotten back to you in a timely manner, I must apologize for that. It is not our normal service. We have from the very beginning strived to insure that you get the best value for your money. Although there is not a perfect host out there, we would like to think of us as one that you can count on. The IP address changes were/are necessary, since they belonged to the upstream provider. We have been making every attempt to keep all sites online and active. There was a server that was giving us problems, and since so many people were on it, we moved people off of it. There were problems, although not too many of them , but they couldn't be avoided. Since I am the CEO of WeinBar Communications, I want to extend an apology to everyone. If you have been with us for a while, you know that this is not the norm for us. If you just joined us, you are seeing us at our very worst -- something that I deeply regret. Please feel free to contact me directly at mweinstein@weinbar.com with any concerns. I want to make your hosting experience as enjoyable as possible, and with the new control panel and new options that will be coming out, along with moving people off of servers that have had problems (you know if you were on a poor perfoming server with downtimes and slow times), you shuldn't be seeing these anymore. Again, I want to make myself personally available for anyone who wants to talk about this. I have also opened the phone lines for people to talk without going through email. The phone number is 480-661-1300. I also know that it is a bit inconvient to join the forums and the support site, but we do this because there are a lot of people who try to register and flame our staff with bogus reports and they don't even have valid accounts or emails. Nothing is perfect. We are only trying. Thank you for your understanding and your past patronage. And again, if there is anything we can do, please let me know. clocker1996 02-16-2002, 05:49 PM I don't mind. You guys have been great for many months. Really stable, and hardly ever down. Some down time is alright with me. I understand, and I'd hope that other long time weinbar customers would too. MSW 02-16-2002, 05:59 PM Thanks for the support. All we are asking for is a few more days to finish the transition and we will be as stable as ever. If I had a chance to warn people ahead of time, I would, but we had to do it this way. We understand people who do not have faith in us will leave, or those who are upset that we changed their IP addresses will move onto a different host, but frankly these things happen. We didn't want it to be this way. We were forced into it, and now we are dealing as best we could. clocker1996 02-17-2002, 01:07 AM Heh, After reading your second last post, I was going to post a question here for you, but then i thought maybe it will be better if i emailed you. So i emailed you asking a question or two. I then was going to post here saying "check your email" But i thought, "that'dbe stupid, he posted his email in this thread, i am almost 100% sure he will check his email, i don't need to remind him" The whole day went by, i wait, and wait, no replies. Oh well. MSW 02-17-2002, 01:36 AM Did you email me? clocker1996 02-17-2002, 04:20 AM I sent an email to mweinstein@weinbar.com |
