Hello,

I've been interested in installing RedHat on my system for a long time and just had a few questions before starting.

I have a 60 GB hard drive and it currently has two partions, C & D

Drive C = 15 GB with Windows XP
Drive D = 45 GB with mostly applications & personal files

Is it possible to partion my drive D into two drives say D & E while not losing my current files.

Thus I would have a new E drive with about 15 GB for Linux, my C Drive with Windows XP, and my D drive with my application files.

Next if I can get through that, I will want to install Linux onto the E Drive. Everything okay with that?

Thanks,

It is okay. But you should use a recent version of Linux distribution though, some old version won't let you boot if the boot partition is above cylinder 1024, which probably is in your case.

There are several way to shrink your partition:

- You can use something like partition magic
- Some distribution (Mandrake) are able to rezise partitions as part of install process.

On newer distros, you can even install Linux on your existing FAT partition. The space used by Linux then will appear as one huge file on your Windows partition. However I don't recommend this as it can affect performance.
