I am looking for a company to host a vBulletin site I'd like to start. Though transfer rate would not be an issue initially, I'd like to be prepared and sign up with a host that provides ample bandwidth.

Through researching webhostingtalk and sitepoint, and seeing what others have recommended, I've narrowed my choices between tera-byte and hostrocket. Hostrocket offers 200MB of storage and 10GB of bandwidth for $9.95. Tera-byte offers 99MB of storage and 20GB of bandwidth for $9.25. Both offer PHP 4 and mysql.

Because I am new to the vBulletin software, I am looking for a host that has experience with this program and can provide the best support.

I've e-mailed both hosts and tera-byte was very quick in responding but hostrocket has been quite slow.

Any other input so I can finalize my decision would be helpful.

Thanks

P.S. Annete at Hostmatters was great, offering very detailed responses quickly, but I would like one that offers a bit more bandwidth. I plan on using them for smaller sites though.

I host with both. Tera-byte for me is just that little bit better than hostrocket.

I agree with Technics. Either way, you'll make a right choice.

Truthfully, no host should support that program, but the two you mentioned are pretty mellow and willing to help out when they can. I think you'd do fine either way. Personal preference.

Are you talking about vBulletin, I just bought it and was preparing to look for a suitable host as per this thread. But then again aren't you using it, or are you the moderator???? I know I'm old, and usually confused but what's up?????

Sorry, maybe I confused 'support' with 'alter the script and provide technical assistance with it'. Any host that offers a SQL db and php will support it (as in host it). Not to alarm you!!! :)

Thanks, my life is like a box of chickens, re-reading I understand what you said... No alarm, I'm satisfied with vB. Just running around like I have my head cut off, have tried so many hosts, just to be dis-satisfied or had by their billing departments. So many opinions to sort out, hate to waste more money and time. Everyone seems to like tera-byte, but their web design leaves a little to be desired as far as information. Site-5 has the Zend Optimizer, does that help alot for vBulletin sites?

I thought the same thing regarding tera-byte's lack of information on their website. (What aren't they telling me and why?) I'm sure that they are a great web host, but when you're deciding between very comparable hosts, every little detail matters.

I am very curious about Zend Optimizer as well. Anyone know if this is useful?

Zend Optimizer is extremely useful, as it speeds up processing/parsing of PHP by a very sizable percentage (PHP geeks who hang around here will be able to inform you of the precise figures). If a host offers PHP4 with ZO, and you're intending to run some PHP-intensive scripts, then go for it. Just make sure the other features + prices are up to scratch and realistic ;)
