I'm 20. I'm working on my doctorate. I'm an accomplished violinist (I'm told I could easily become a professional if I wanted to). My friends variously describe me as "thoughtful", "considerate", and "a gentleman". I wouldn't say I'm particularly good looking, but I don't think I'm ugly either. I'm looking for a relationship based on shared interests and am not particularly looking for sex (not that I'd object, but it certainly isn't an item of primary interest).
So why the **** am I still single?

Looks like it is time for you to visits americansingles or adultfriendfinder. ;)
ToastyX 02-14-2002, 11:41 AM I'm girlfriend-challenged. :(
(SH)Saeed 02-14-2002, 11:47 AM cperciva, good things don't come fast. Usually things that come fast, disapear fast as well. Just take it easy and give it time, you're still very young.
phpjames 02-14-2002, 11:48 AM HEEEEEEEEEELP !

Still young? I'm a mathematician! My most productive years are supposed to be between the ages of 18 and 21!
If this problem is too hard for me to crack now, how am I supposed to deal with it once I hit middle age?

You spend too much time online posting to meaningless forums. Instead if reading slashdot, you should be out meeting women.
It was great...
I ordered Roses from 1-800-Flowers which decided to FedEx them to my girl friend at school. The school had the package forwarded to the district office across town. Which really sucks, and they won't release the package to me.

You're probably quite right... but my question wasn't entirely unrhetorical. Relationships, as a general rule, don't survive inequity; if one person feels overwhelmed by the other, there won't be any good future.
Given that the idea of a 20 year old DPhil student astonishes most people, it isn't easy, even in Oxford, to find someone to whom I can really relate as an equal. (Of course, Oxford is still much better than most places in this regard.)
When preliminary concerns of this nature eliminate over 99% of potential partners, it's not all that surprising that I'm still looking.
I'm a webhost. I'm working. :)
Seriously, though, V-day is highly overrated. Treat your SO right all year long, and Vday just isn't that big of a deal. Treat your SO like scum all year & Vday is a good chance to prove you aren't 100% dense, though.
I buy flowers/cards a couple times a month "just because", so my working today just isn't a big deal. Of course, there are fresh tulips in a vase on the dining room table, and I'm looking forward to taking a break sometime this evening to cuddle on the couch in between trouble tickets.
henryclay 02-14-2002, 11:11 PM I am having a great day.
Tallon 02-15-2002, 01:30 AM I try to think of Valentines as just another day, nothing special. I don't have a boyfriend so I went for a nice long walk this morning instead, romantic hey? :)
Tim Greer 02-15-2002, 03:51 AM I did the flowers and candy, etc. deal, rented a Tux and took my wife out to dinner. Nothing unique, but she really liked it and we enjoyed ourselves. I don't really like any day that people flock to stores to buy things, because society says, but it's nice to woo your significant other when you can, even if it's socially expected. That doesn't stop me from wooing her on other days either though. :-)
Plus, that same flowers/candy/tux stuff will be 25% cheaper next week..... ;)

True, very true... now I regret not buying stock a while ago... I meed to start doing that. Risk free.
XTStrike 02-15-2002, 05:36 AM well, it was yesterday, nothing special here, single male.
if something comes along then its ok with me, being single is the easy life, sharing life with someone else would be fine, been there done that and we didnt get on well enough on any occasion.
its all about finding the right person.
I was talking to a group of 4 single women yesterday on a course I was tutoring and we got onto the topic of jobs, and statistically they say that Computer, Solicitor, Lawyer, Dentist, etc... professional people stand a much lower chance of finding the right person due to their attitude to life and dedication to their jobs.
They mentioned, fitness instructors, builders, architechts, hairdressers, DJ's have a much higher chance.
DJ's being the most eligible.
So, if you want to get women your best bet is to become a professional DJ!!

Xstrike knows this, but this is not a joke for those that question it. Of course, it also depends on the type of person you are, but DJ's can hook up with girls easier than anyone else... well, unless they are on TV and have a good look. DJ's can attrack people with their voice and don't have to look good, yet a lot of girls will chase them. I've got a friend that is a popular DJ and he is living proof. *L*
Tim Greer 02-15-2002, 08:56 AM Z-Rock is a local-ish radio station... this post reminded me of their crappy site's job section:

Chicken -- you are making me nervous, when our little packet is born, is that what we have to look forward to?
My wife and I turned off the computers, exchanged gifts, went to a nice resaurant for dinner and played Stratego and Mancala for the rest of the night...it was romantic in a subdued way.
btw: Why isn't there an option on the quiz for: Spent a quiet evening with my partner.

Its really strange, when IT people have kids they refer to them as computer terms and food varieties (McNugget, Packet)
whats next dare I ask???

Well, I can't speak for Chicken, but I like packet because it allows me to make innuendos about my datastream, my wife's firewall, transmission control, etc :D.
Actually, it started because all of her pregnant friends have names for their kids, little owl, lima bean (Chicken will probably know where that come from), little bundle, etc. So, I suggested, being a geek and all, that we would have a little packet (oh, and the url was available :D):

And the choices that are there imply that you could only have had a good Valentines Day if you're in some romantic relationship -- there's only one choice for "don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend," so you have to choose that or whether you had a good evening or not -- or "I don't celebrate Valentine's Day."
I went out with single friends Katie and Carrie to a bar where another friend was bartending. We played pool, played darts, had a couple of drinks, exchanged little chocolates, the girls got roses. So we celebrated Valentine's Day... and had a great time.
Valentines Day isn't over at my house, yet. :) I still have stuff planned.
And, on the topic of how IT people refer to children and such. You guys give me all the more reasons to never have children.

Hehehe, what if you are a DJ and a Computer Geek???
Oh wait I have a girl...
So I guess the DJ part helps ;) :D

I wonder if that is common theme amongst us geeks, and pseudo-geeks? My wife loves it when we do things that don't involve the computer (though she is chained to hers about as much as I am :D). It reminds me of the Dilbert strip where his girlfriend asks if he likes his computer more than her, and he says "No, I do not like that computer more than you." He is thinks to himself: "Please don't ask me about the laptop."
MarcD 02-15-2002, 05:25 PM lmao i have wondered that also
the thing that made me think was new gf
about 2 weeks ago we were discussing how she needed to get internet in her new house
i told her i can give it to her for free/
she said ok and hasnt even cared about it since
man if i dont check my email or even look at a some stupid site or forum or something every day i start the withdrawal process
bitserve 02-15-2002, 05:56 PM I was desperate for a date.
I asked my house mate to be my valentine and then we went out for dinner, came home, and watched Buffy.
It was fun.
code_renegade 02-16-2002, 12:21 AM Well, I went out and celebrated my singlehood with a bunch of ladies, so we're all happy about our status :D
MCHost-Marc 02-16-2002, 02:54 AM Valentine's Day online. :) It was great, even though there are a few 1000 miles in between right now. A little stress ...all day working and all night on the phone. :D
akashik 02-16-2002, 01:24 PM Was pretty good here. Quiet day at home. Saphire and diamond ring for her (white gold), and a box of white chocolate heart shaped cookies for our daughter :) I picked up a new monitor for myself so we were all happy *grin*
