View Full Version : My web hosting experience
freehtml 02-14-2002, 04:34 AM These are just some of my experience with the webhosts locally in Singapore.
I begin to have my own domain "www.freehtml.com" in Aug 1997 (However now this domain is taken by others, I should had kept it). The site was hosted by Web Visions (www.webvisions.com) , of a 30 Mb package with CGI and all that.. No PHP or MySQL.
I think I pay around 35++ SGD for monthly fees.
The support that time was very fast and good, maybe because they are still building up their business.
In May I register a "personal domain" - www.sanguo.per.sg" to start my Romance of Three Kingdoms site, coincidentally, the webhost is a reseller and the server also belongs to Web Visions.
Overall, I can say the uptime is very good, seldom had downtime.
But when I planned to use MySQL that time, I was told to download it and install myself.. Being a non-tech person in configuring servers , i fail despite many tries, and the only thing they told me is "We do not support MySQL"
Thus I give out, and in the end in Jan 2001, I found another webhost - SG.GS at www.sg.gs , their service was good, I had a 150 MB package with MySQL and PHP4.. It was around 50 SGD per month... I registered my second domain "www.sanguo-online.com" for my RTK site.
Then in Dec 2001, I decide to switch to a more establishing web host, and it was where I found Verztec.com web hsoting (www.myhostpartner.com)
I begin migration in Jan 2002..but the forum data that I had was not able to be migrated, due to a possible corrupted database.
That was my hosting experience till now..
Anyone care to share theirs?
rascal 02-14-2002, 04:47 AM Local hosting companies in Singapore is definitely a joke!
What they are offering is way too expensive considering the features they are providing as compared to hosting in US.
Have not come across any Singapore hosting company which is worth to sunscribe to.
Thank goodness the industry has come a long way since those bad times.
I've been lucky myself, started with an excellent host not even a year ago ( thanks Gary @ aussiehosts ) and have had a good time since then.
Lats...
rascal 02-14-2002, 04:57 AM And www.sg.gs offers unlimited transfer........give me the creeps.
Sent a mail to them with regards to their unlimited transfer. They capped it till 12GB but they had the following requirements as taken from their page;
Abuse of Unlimited Traffic
SG.GS's customers are privileged to be offered unlimited traffic for their web sites. The intention of SG.GS is to provide a large space to serve web documents, not an offsite storage area for electronic files. All (90%) of your web pages (html) must be 'linked' with files (.GIF, .JPEG, etc.) stored on SG.GS's server. Web sites that are found to contain either/or no html documents, a large number of unlinked files are subject to warning, suspension or cancellation at the discretion of SG.GS management. Any customer who violates SG.GS's Policies in abusing either space/site transfer will be notified and given 2 days to remedy the problem. If the problem is not resolved within the alloted 2 day period, the client will be billed for the overages.
To maintain the integrity of our service, unlimited bandwidth will NOT apply to these sites:
Sites with banners, graphics or cgi scripts running from their domain used on other domains.
Sites with picture galleries (This is any site where 50% of the files transferred is graphics)
Sites offering download files or archives. (This is any site where 50% or more of there monthly traffic is from file downloads).
Sites using more than 30% of system resources for longer than 60 seconds.
Sites running multimedia files (QuickTime, Real Audio, Real Video, MP3).
For those that do not qualify for the unlimited service, traffic will go unmonitored until you reach 12GB per month. Thereafter, normal data transfer cost of $20.00/1GB/month will be billed to your account. You will receive a notice on Sunday detailing your bandwidth usage through electronic mailing. You will have 7 days to pay for your overages. If you do not pay for your overages your site will be disabled within 7 days of your first notice.
SG.GS will be the sole arbiter as to what constitutes a violation of this provision.
Can't believe they actually do not allow multimedia files.....sigh
It's not unlimited after all.:bawling:

do inform me when your site is up.
mattan 02-14-2002, 10:34 AM I think the important point to look at here is where are your target audience coming from (or where the majority of them are coming from).
If most of your surfers are coming from Singapore, then it makes more sense just to have site located in Singapore because its definitely faster and you'll have lesser downtime. And vice-versa if most of your surfers are coming from the US.
But, I definitely agree with the point made that is much cheaper and you get more options by using a provider in US than compared in South East Asia where bandwidth is generally more expensive and limited
Cheers

Come to think about it, a US host is defintely better ....and cheapers even though after the converstion from USD to SGD..
I still have 2 domains with me, maybe I will use one of them for US web host.

Saw your hosting plans, it still not worth it. (G-Plan) With 150MB Web + Email space and 10MB SQL for S$30????
Can't believe you are actually offering it here.
<<MOD NOTE: Neither can I considering the forum guidelines prohibit that sort of thing>>
<<removed>>
On the other hand, I've seen lot of various offers here.
The fact is that server is located in Singapore. And accessing local websites is much faster. Frankly, even though american hosts are much better, cheaper, and have way too better service, I would never advise my local clients to take anything but local host.
Just to make clear, and avoid future posting back and forth - to clients whos websites are targeting *mainly SG* audience.
Some of our local clients whose audience is overseas, or our overseas clients' websites are actually hosted on our US server.

Cheers!
mattan 02-14-2002, 12:21 PM on the way..
Having said that, I'd stick with my saying that you should host your website from the location where most of your clients are coming from if connection speed if of utmost importance.
Local sites definitely load faster and face lesser downtime due to connectivity problems in main backbone connections going abroad either to US or Japan

Totally agree with the access speed etc.
But to pay for something which is not even on par with overseas offerings is a definite NO.
SO far like I said have never come across a local host which attracts my attention.
The S$30 for the plan ain't worth it if speed was the only attraction. That 10MB SQL is definitely a joke. :D
PS: Are you dating me out or what? You can send me a PM:stickout:

Read the policy page on both companies and they are definitely similar.
