The Canadians certainly seem to be the more popular of the two. (heck even Jay Leno was waving the flag) Thats probably almost as much satisfaction as having the medal itself.

I am under the impression that figure skating is all rigged anyway.

I have a feeling that by the end of the olympics they are going to give the Canadians a gold medal too. I mean, did you see how hot the chick skater was? How could you not give her the hold :D

I didnt actually see either of their performances but from the replays that I caught and all of the press my vote has to go for the Canadians. I wouldnt blame the Russian pair for the judging error though, it really is a sad thing that happened but the judges themselves should be criticized not the skaters.

Seems to me the answer to the question "Who won" is pretty cut and dry. The Russians won. They have the gold medals. Now, if you want to ask, "who do you think should have won".... Well, that's a different question.

One thing I do remind people, though, is that the competition was not based on the long program, alone, but takes into account the short program, as well. The Russian team was in the lead after the short program.

In other words, there is more to the "controversy" than just what the media is portraying. It is a judged sport that was very, very close. If it can be proven that any of the judges did anything against the rules, then that should be dealt with. Otherwise, let's not let the entire week be ruined.

Well not really because the Canadians did a pretty much perfect skate and got only 5.7 and 5.8

This question was also posted on nbcolympics.com and it was a landslide.

96% voted for the Canadians
4% voted for the Russians

Even Bob Costas was cracking jokes about this.

I also read a headline that the two of the judges were forced to vote for the Russians by the federation.

I also thought that figure skating was also always kind of rigged because the winners are picked even before they hit the Olympic ice. They are judged based on how they practiced. At least this is what I heard on tv.

Well, so what? If they'd posed the question before the competition even began: "who do you want to win, "the Russians" or "the Canadians," it would have been a similar landslide. Not only are the majority of viewers not experts in judging figure skating, they're even more biased than the typical judge.

And how many of the people who voted on the website didn't even watch the competition? Every bit of coverage has told us that the Canadians should have won... even if you didn't watch you feel like you know that. There's no room or reason to formulate your own opinion.

I haven't really paid much attention to "the controversy" but I was watching when it happened. As I remember it, all the judges gave the Canadian pair, deservedly, higher marks for "technical merit." The French and the Russian judges then gave the Russian pair higher marks for "artistic impression." But isn't that aspect purely opinion? Couldn't those two judges legitimately have a greater appreciation for the more classic style that the two Russians presented?

Fact is, I'm sure it happens all the time in skating at all levels. But this time, it's the Olympics for one thing, and for another it's easy to put an us vs. them spin because of the countries involved. If it had happened the other way around -- the Russian pair "clearly" being better but being "cheated out of the gold" in favor of the Canadians -- would it be so controversial, and would support for the underdogs be so universal?

I don't know, I'm just asking questions.

At least this is what I heard on tv.Precisely. :)

while there was probably some scandal involved, and the canadian couple probably should have won..

they didn't. the Russians did. And until some comittee decides that was the case, and the russians have to return their medals, the russians are the "winners"

I agree CANADA WON hands down. But until we are able to get these !@#$%^ committees to admit to this blatant
foul play there is not a damn thing we could do.

Oh well we will win GOLD in MEN'S HOCKEY. GO CANADA:D :D :D :D :D
