You'll need a program to do it. There are some trial ones you can find on places like download.com. Do a search on download.com or google for "mp3 to midi converter" and take your pick. Many of the trials only allow you to do a certain number on conversions before you have to purchase it. So if you have a massive number of files that need to be converted, you may have to buy one. As for how to do it, it's rather simple. Many of the programs will have ask you for the source file, then ask you for the destination for the converted file. It does the rest.

If you were looking for a script to do it, I don't know of any. Sorry.

Edit - Also, if you by chance have any of the more popular audio editing applications like Sound Forge, or something of the like, they can certainly do it as well. With Sound Forge, you just File > Open the file, then File > Save As a different format.

I dont think its actually possible to convert an MP3 to midi.

What you are better off doing is changing the bit rate of the mp3 to something like 64kbps or 32kbps. It degrades the quality but still tolerable.

You could also try other formats such as OGG or WMA as they have good compression technology as well.

stealthdevial is 100% corrent.

An mp3 is a recording of music or sound.
A MIDI file is a seried of instructions to sound card. Almost like a sequential program. A midi file does not 'sounds' like anything . It is merely instructions of what note to play. The sound cards MIDI interface will interpret how to represent that sounds.

you could also look to see if anyone has made MIDI's of the songs you want to play...you may be surprised

You can make a midi of an mp3, but I wouldn't exactly recommend it.

As someone mentioned before, midi's are only instructions to your sound card to play tones which will end up sounding like a song. Because it is just tones, there are no vocals or anything else.

The other thing to remember is that because not everybody has the same soundcard, the midi will sound differently for everybody.

On some computers it may sound fantastic, on others it may sound horrible....Luck of the draw....

You use a compiler to extract the source of the sound file, and save it as a midi. Works every time for me, I'm also not sure if it's legal or not, but heh.
