View Full Version : If not *****, then what webhost/reseller company?

After reading what's been posted here at WebHostingTalk, I see that my plan to go ***** is a bad one. However, I really want a webhosting company that will provide the tech services to my resold accounts and I also want most of the features CI offered (unlimited e-mail, autoresponders, aliases, mailinglists, majordomo's, STMP (? [Hotmail like e-mail services for my resolds?] and other features not usually bundled from what I can see. Are there any good companies out there that offer this kind of reseller programs? Joe

P.S. Has anyone heard of any positive changes at *****?

I hace heard alot of goods and bads about *****. Basically this is on personal opinion. I would suggest getting a normal hosting account with them and test them out before reselling for them.

OLM.NET/WEBAXXS.NET offers a decent reselling service (and your customer's support requests are handled by OLM). It was something I considered at one time.

I signed up for ***** reseler (the cheaper one, standar) before I heard bad news about them and my 30 days trial had ended before I joined this forum. Well, although I have not launched my website (have not reselling for them), I have no complaint either about their service. I did test their tech support (by asking them simple problems -> most problem from your clinets are usually simple ones) by opening a support ticket. I got the resolution in less than 2 hours (always).

I was assigned a server, called ammarretto. It seems to me that they have about >1000 accounts in the server but everytime I telnet to the server, I am usually the only one around (Well, I expect with more than 1000 user in the server, few percent of them will telent into the server at the same time, right? That's why I suspect some of the accounts are probably just email accounts). BTW, telneting to the server was fast too (no real slow down, so I guess their backbone is OK; they claim they have 10 T3)

Anyway, although some people will just laugh at me because I joined their reseller program, I could not see why. They did have a bad time last year, but I am sure every hosting company had their nightmare. All the complains I have read are the old ones too. There are no really new complaints as far as I know....

I pay only $49.95/mo but look at what I got:
- my own toll free number for my client tech support (back by *****)
- reselling as low as $6/mo with 600 MB of space and 20 GB of bandwith/mo for my customer
- tons of softwares included.
- PHP, mySQL, CGI/Perl etc supported
- ability to sell NT/Linux accounts
- etc...

Where else can I get all these with only <$50/mo (especially the toll free tech support which I can even brand it to my company's name)? I consider this to be the most valuable aspect a reseller can get, to have a good tech support (which I think they do have it, from my own personal opinion).

PS: I am not trying to make a hot issue here, but please tell me whehter ***** really is a hosting company to avoid? They did mess up but which hosting company here can guranteed themselves that they will never ever mess up, not even mess up like ***** did?

cheer,

I thought about doing the reseller thing awhile back. I had an account with ***** for over a year, I only stayed with them for that long because they owed me $$$$$, in the first 6 months they over charged my Visa twice, they say there's a better billing system now. I also endured the incident, over a week their dns servers were down, so was I.

When I started the reseller thing, I again like a fool went with them because of the phone support they provide. I was with them on this for over two months and they were never able to get my custom name servers up. Luckily they never charged me this time???

I was never able to get an answer on their service ticket system, I had to call and be placed on hold for close to 15-20 min at a time. The techs were nice, but could not fix anything, always had to wait till the day shift upper level techs came in.

In my opinion they are bad. Slow servers, poor support, but they are cheap.

No one can garrantee they won't screw up, it's how they handle it if they do, you just have to go by public opinion, or take a chance you'll be lucky.

I`ve just found a reseller that is cheaper, better, smaller by looking into this for a week. I also was scared away from *****.

Anyway, I`m sure I`m going to make http://www.web-x-press.com my reseller host when they get their reseller plan up (they say a few days)!

What makes you think web-x-press.com has a good/better reseller program than *****? I can't find any information on their page regarding their reseller program. This company also offer "unblimited space/traffic"; doesn't that make you worry?

cheers,

There really is no such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth I often wonder what kind of turn over a place like that has when people find out they are limited on space and bandwidth I would think they would pack up and leave making for a high turn over rate.

I know there is no such thing that is unlimited. But if you`re a reseller and you run an adver saying 15$.Stor:unlimited Band:Unlimeited , a lot of people will fall for that rather then 15$ S:50mb B:6GB , and 98% of them won`t even come near to finding out what unlimited realy means.

Dektong: I know ***** has bags of more feutures, but I was thinking of costumer service.

Do mean that web-x-press is a reseller from halfpricehosting.com? Or what do you mean? If so, how can you tell?

Yep, that's what I did and came up with. I'd check the board/web for reviews for halfpricehosting before I'd become a reseller for a reseller of halfprice. I'm not sure you'd want to do that.

I suggest getting an account with them and test them out before reselling for them. Do they offer free trials? Also do a thourough search at http://www.recellar.com

Thanks for finding that out for me!
It`s wierd that they`re realy offering more than halfp. , I`m going to stay away from them, but they seemed to have a great response time.

I don`t realy want to resell from a reseller, so is ***** still very unfriendly (I`m hocked on the unlimited thing you see). DO anyone know of any "unlimited" companies that aren`t resellers?

*****: they have a online chat system, but when I try to get in (with fake details) it appears that I am standing in line to get to the support person. Does anyone know if one can chat to whomever that is in the chat room when you are a real costumer of them, or is it the "wait in line" solution even then?

It appeared that ***** was overcharging me so I contacted their billing dept for an explanation. I received no reply over a period of about 4 months to my 7 or 8 messages. I believe that they overcharged me $120 over the last year.

I did a search on " ***** overcharge" and found more horror than my own story. These discussions indicated that even if you quit, guard your card. So I made plans to close the ***** account with care. I contacted my charge-card company but they would not simply block future charges. I reported the card stolen to force a number change (the only option the customer-rep could apply).

With my charge-card number changed I requested that the web account be cancelled. ***** responded within two days, indicating that the account was closed with no indication of problems. In fact, the account was in good standings but approaching a new billing cycle. A few days after notification of closure the ***** billing dept hit my defunct card-number with a charge attempt which their automaton reported to me as a failure. They continued to attempt a charge every day or so for about two weeks. The attempted-charge amount gradually increased until yesterday when it was $180+.

I replied to their earlier messages with a statement of disbelief that the billing dept was so out of contact with the rest of the company. I also requested an explanation of the charge and of the overcharges last year. No reply to my reply. And in their last several messages they said they were going to close the account for non-payment. Well, duh!

The site in question is my wife's business site which I relocated to successfulhosting.com. I do like their control panel but know little about the company. I signed up for 6 months just in case they don't work out.

(I am not in the same league with you guys but teach networking and appreciate your discussions.)

Gary

Most likely this stuff is automated but although automation is great, like you said, if a person cancels the account, *someone* has to be responsible to change the billing for the customer so that they won't be charged. It seems this isn't happening all the time. And once something is screwed up, it is an inconvenience for the customer to straighten it all out (obviously).
