A host I know recently stated the following:

"I run two personal machines here...

My "File Slave" is an Athlon 1 gigahertz (mildly overclocked from 1000 Mhz to 1100 Mhz)

That way I can monitor both servers with my file slave while still having my primary machine to work (and play!) on..."

He has 2 monitors hooked up to his "file slave" to monitor both the servers he runs.

Is this commonplace? Do you recommend it?

Why would he need a monitor for monitoring a single server? That would be a waste of resource! A single terminal window should be sufficient to monitor a server, a decent monitor can easily show six or more terminal windows without overlapping.
