View Full Version : Domain Registrars - Payment Options?
Lisa J 12-27-2004, 04:53 PM Are there any domain registrars that offer other payment options like check or money order? I've had a bad experience with a company (non domain company, but nonetheless) with my bank card, and I'd rather not have my card number out there again with any other company.
Are there any reliable domain registrars that offer those other payment options?
dmaven 12-27-2004, 05:02 PM RegisterFly.com and 000domains both allow checks/money orders. I use RegisterFly myself and they are wonderful
Dave Zan 12-27-2004, 05:42 PM You mean regfly and 000domains actually allow those 2 methods
to purchase and register domains? Isn't that rather unfair if so?
CD Burnt 12-27-2004, 05:49 PM unfair? ??????
Lisa J, a lot of hosting businesses will register a name for you, check/money order. if you like your webhost, just ask them.
to minimize everyones renewal/expiration hassles, I would recommend registering it for more than one year.

Unfair? Please exlain
Dave Zan 12-27-2004, 06:44 PM I've always believed it's fair that registrars and resellers allow
registration of domain names only via credit card instead of, say,
"reserving" the name pending payment. Obviously I need some
more enlightenment on this field. :)
How do those providing names as part of their hosting packages
pull this off without upsetting the general public, especially those
aching to get the name they want?
dmaven 12-27-2004, 06:46 PM I would not imagine they would register the name or render any services until payment has cleared.

I don't like to register domain names with the web host b/c if I want to move to a new web host, the old one likes to keep the domain I registered with them.
I was working with a friend of mine on a site and she registered her space and domain with ActiveWebHosting (I think that's the name of it). When she wanted to change web hosts, they kept her domain. I'd rather register my domain with separate company, esp. a company that's dedicated to domains.

*shakes your hand vigorously*
Not too many people know that, actually.

Surely it's up to a registrar whether or not they offer credit terms to their customers? If the customer doesn't pay it's the registrar that's out of pocket. If a registrar is prepared to take that risk then it's up to the registrar!
I remember the days when Network Solutions would register domains without prepayment (and then send an invoice by postal mail). I've still got some nineteen-ninety-something Netsol paper invoices in my archives somewhere...
Techno 12-27-2004, 08:31 PM 000domains registers the domain within hours of receiving your money order.
Lisa J 12-27-2004, 09:44 PM Now I'm trying to register a domain with 000domains, but when I got to the "method of payment" page, I don't see the option of money orders. What's going on? I'm confused. I emailed them about it, so I'll be waiting for a response. But I was thinking that they want a credit card on file just because, which defeats the whole purpose of not giving out a card number. *sigh*
dmaven 12-27-2004, 09:49 PM Whether you use RegisterFly or 000domains you still need to send in the money order in advance.

I understand that. My point was if they have the payment options of credit/bank card, check, or money order, why aren't all the options on the "method of payment" page? If I'm paying with a money order, why do I have to give out my credit card info?
dmaven 12-27-2004, 09:56 PM To give you an example how it works at RegisterFly
1 - You send them an money order provided with the information they give you(address etc)
2- They receive your payment and add the funds to your account balance
3 - You purchase domains/services from your account balance and are never prompted for payment for CC:
Lisa J 12-27-2004, 10:02 PM Oh! So I don't reserve the domain online, I just send them all of my info by mail. Gotcha! That makes more sense now, sorry for misunderstanding you. Thanks!
dmaven 12-27-2004, 10:07 PM no problem, glad to be helpful

Now that clears things! Thanks, too!
Makes sense also. Of course, the only risk there is the possibility
the name might be taken by the time your account is ready, so
it's best to have your credit card handy if it can be helped.
dmaven 12-28-2004, 03:20 PM I agree, although a money order is not always the most expedicious way to register names
