View Full Version : How many websites ???
SilverSting 12-27-2004, 12:58 PM I'm wondering how many website a server is hosting... is there a lookup I can do? I'm curious to know how many websites are running off a one server.
If I have the ip address can this be checked with a lookup tool of some sort?
Why would you want to know?
crazyfish 12-27-2004, 01:11 PM you can try http://www.whois.sc/
you can enter the IP or the domain name, its interesting to see how overloaded some server can be, I came across a server of (hopefully) a future client and there were 61,000 sites hosted at that IP address. No wonder the site took about 10 minutes to fully load on my 3mbit cable connection.
other info can be provided by http://www.domainwhitepages.com/
serverunion 12-27-2004, 02:37 PM webhosting.info is a nice service.
thomas.smith 12-27-2004, 03:03 PM You can find it out on www.webhosting.info.
osphere 12-27-2004, 05:58 PM I prefer webhosting.info rather than whois.sc because whois.sc only gives you 3 results if you have a free account
Hosted.cc 12-27-2004, 06:00 PM Quite a handy tool. When I type my domain name in, all I get is "N/A" -- I typed my buddies in and it shows all 20 of his web sites. Is there any reason why it isn't showing results for me ?

maybe their bot/spider havn't crawl your server yet...
DecentHost 12-27-2004, 10:31 PM If you just want to look for the number of sites, I prefer whois.sc because they update the number of sites more frequent
imploder303 12-28-2004, 11:22 PM Beware that webhosting.info doesn't return all domain extensions (for example .com.ar)
freakb0y 12-29-2004, 05:46 AM I ran webhosting.info on my server, and it returns the same as whois.sc....96 sites, when there are only 53. These are not very reliable...I suspect they keep a log of all sites that have ever been on your server?

It actually counts all domains pointing to your nameservers. For example if you get a customer and the customer cancels and you delete his account but the domain still points to your nameservers this will be counted by Webhosting.info although you are no longer hosting the domain. Also don't forget to count addon domains. One user adds 200 domains -> Webhosting.info says 200 dommains...
freakb0y 12-29-2004, 10:06 PM Nope, I have had 96 sites on my server at one time or the other. so that is where their number comes from. Those 40 or so sites are not pointing to my server anymore...they are elsewhere.
thomas.smith 12-29-2004, 10:43 PM It seems like they are regularly updating their numbers for the total amount of domains but they don`t seem to update the reverse IP thing that often.

Doing a simple domain count only takes a few hours with the zone files. With reverse IP checking, every domain has to be checked for a website and that IP or IP has to be processed. With approximately 46 million domains, that takes some time. From looking at server logs, whois.sc seems to update approximately each week.
