I've recently gotten a request from a customer to downgrade his Fedora Core2 kernel to 2.4, for 'stability reasons'. In my experience, the 2.6 kernel has been solid, and I've had no stability issues with it across hundreds of servers. He is claiming it is a well-known problem, and this is the first such claim I've received.
I'm curious about opinions from other hosters; is there some stability issue with the 2.6 kernel that I'm unaware of? Is 2.4 still preferred, even on Fedora Core2?

The box is questions is currently running:
Linux hostname 2.6.6-1.435smp #1 SMP Mon Jun 14 09:31:56 EDT 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Hi Eric,

With my constant kernel tweaking, I generally find the 2.6 kernel much better, problems exist in both trees, but I experience greater IO performance and more stability with 2.6.x. If problems persist it may be better trying a vanilla 2.6 kernel before switching to 2.4, we're at 2.6.9 at the moment. If it is related to IO I would suggest trying the deadline scheduler.

Trying deadline is good, however there are some issues with 2.6 kernel. If there are any ext3 errors on the drive you run the risk of the kernel mounting the entire server as readonly.
