Dear WHT members,
Interesting question I thought of. What is the impact or resources required on the server , for Cpanel full backup and FTP to another server? Say we encourage our clients to do this often, will the server be overloaded due to daily cpanel backup by the clients?

It really depends on the amount of accounts on your server and the size of the accounts. The cPanel/WHM backup tools do put quite a bit of strain on the server. You would definately want to stay away from a Celeron or Duron system unless you set the backups to only run weekly or monthly.
Generally a Dual Xeon or equal system can run daily backups for 600-1000 accounts without any problems, but that does depend alot on the server's use.

600 - 1000 accounts at one go ? Or in one day ? The reason I am asking is that I believe many hosters only offer daily backup. To some daily back up may mean roll back when their site is hacked.
Do you think using tools like rsync to sync the site to another server better than full daily backup ?
Then again, how does rsync know it is not synchronizing an already defaced website? Thanks Rob for your answers

That quote was for a daily backup. The best thing to do would be to have a second server connected via private NIC just to hold backups on. The second server would make hourly snapshots of the sites and store 48 hours or something such as that.
