1. I am trying to find out what 97.5 uptime means?

1 year = 365 days.
97.5 percent of 365 = 355.87
okay 365-355.87 = 9.13 days
9.13 days = 219.12 hours

If a re-boot is 2 hours, then a server needs to be re-botted 109 times a year. That is 30 perent of a year.

One reboot occurs every 2 weeks it needs a re-boot.

Hopefully in real life it does not work like the above.

Then the big question how long does it take to re-boot, and what is the average down-time each time? What is your experience?

How did I get every 2 weeks? There are 52 weeks a yeara nd multiply by 2 = 104.

Related:
2. How long does a re-boot take for servers? Why do they go down? Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

3. Is there a way to have memory protection or something on shared hosting so the whole server does not go down?

4. How long does maintenace take?

ad 2. Depends on what kind of server you own. If it raid based a reboot takes longer, when disk checking is on it takes even longer etc.

How do reboots take 2 hours? Im not saying ur wrong, Im just a n00b :-P

I know my TFC Server only takes like 4 mins to reboot... and its a Dual 500 Mhz P3, 512 Mb Ram, running win2k.

Heres a good spot for an ad: TFC- 63.164.65.61:27015

If you're worried about downtime, don't reboot so often, obviously.

1. I got 219.15 hours of downtime a year for 97.5%, which is about 4 hours a month. That's not very good uptime at all.
2. If you're just rebooting a server to make some changes, then it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. If the machine has crashed, forcing a reboot, it may never come back up. A completely functioning machine should not crash. If it does, it needs repair.
3. Hanh?
4. Depends on the maintenance and how long it takes.

if only....its a lot closer to 18 hours / month downtime....i dont think you'd be in business long if you were down that frequently.....

Anyway...i doubt they are, they just seem to be covering their backs, *big time* !!

I should have mentioned it is on a Shared Hosting system that has 200 accounts. If one script goes bad, then it knocks the rest offline.

If I could afford my own server or rent one would be nice, but I have not got that much traffic and my making money abilities on my site are low.
