How reliable is a site speed meter like the one at:
http://webservices.cnet.com/Ping/
for measuring a host's performance? I can plug in a host's main page and get a speed - is that any indication of the speed for the individual sites hosted there?

It looks like they ping the site from a single location at a single time. In that respect, it will provide a much less comprehensive view than a performance monitoring service such as Keynote. Of course, it's free, so there's the tradeoff.

The result for any host will depend primarily on how close their network is to the testing network, more so than issues such as diverse connectivity, LAN quality, etc.
