View Full Version : My website threatened! what would you do ?
RofyHost 12-21-2004, 12:41 PM Hello WHTers,
My website have been threatened just because:
I received an order for a reseller plan, payment was made using StormPay, I did setuped the account almost instantly and send the welcome email.
The day after, I've got an email from Stormpay stating that the client did a Charge Back
Well, I simply cancelled the account. I could contact the client to alert him, but the account was just setuped and I taught it wasn't necessary to discuss a charge back from day ONE!!! while the service was great!
Few hours after I did receive an email from that client asking why his account was cancelled, I answered simply that he made a charge back and obviously the account was cancelled.
Few hours after that I received an email threatening my website:
"> thanks but take care your web site , i will take it "
What would you do ??
Not quite sure how that broken english is threating your website.
thomas.smith 12-21-2004, 12:51 PM Laugh about it...then forget about it.
gbjbaanb 12-21-2004, 12:57 PM You could always add his IP or hostname to your deny.hosts file and forget him.
RofyHost 12-21-2004, 01:01 PM thanks everybody for your much appreciated input
Kraken 12-21-2004, 01:02 PM Most hacker threats are bluffs, due to the fact that the guy can't even speak English and threaten you properly, I doubt he could hack your website. Don't worry, you can always block his IP as mentioned before.
Also, contact his ISP and the local police station, that'll shut him up.
osphere 12-21-2004, 03:15 PM Yep, they are just talkers, i have a lot of these. But right now they are not just talkers, im having daily hacking attempts, yesterday i think it was the worst day ever, with 3 attempts, one lasted from 7.53 to 9.34. My serverload was huge!! then i blocked him.

That's right. As I always say, "If you can't threaten someone properly, don't threaten them at all."

So, all of the Russian, Chinese and Brazillian hacker groups that do mass defacements all speak fluent english?
Take his contact info, store it offline, and make sure you log everything. If somethign happens to your box, print out all of the logs, and include his contact info, and mail it to the FBI.
RofyHost 12-21-2004, 05:09 PM Thank you amish_geek, I will do! but hope I will not have to :)
Make sure you have backups of your site just incase, which you should already keep
RofyHost 12-21-2004, 05:33 PM I do have backups apart, this is always a good idea ;)
what I wanted to say is that I am really feeling secure with all WHTers, this is really outstanding!! there is always someone here for you !!
I wish looooooooooooooooong life to our WHT forums and to all WHTers who really make it that wonderful :)

I'm not sure, why don't you go ask them? The best hacker groups don't usually threaten, they'll attack, take what they need such as bank details / logs or anything, then leave without a trace. Therefore, they cannot be arrested because they have never made a threat which could be traced.

Yes, remote backups even ;-)
gghosting 12-21-2004, 08:28 PM Although it is likely just a joke I would tell his ISP about what he said.

 That is good I am going to save that if you do not mind :).
Tecknoh 12-21-2004, 08:52 PM I wouldnt worry about it. Chances are, he/she wouldnt know the first think about doing anything mailicious anyway. The people with that knowledge usually dont brag about it ;)
ExeFiles.com 12-22-2004, 02:23 PM He probably wanted a hosting account for nothing and didn't realize that you'd catch on so fast. Since you did, he's/she is a little upset and perhaps threatened you.
I believe he'll move onto another host and try the same thing. It's probably best that you forget him/her, as he/she has probably already forgot you, and is now working on another host.
Like you said, ALWAYS have your backup.
If you REALLY feel like you were threatened, then it's always best to contact you law enforcement and notify their ISP.

You are right! This one must be wannabe ...

And what if you tell them ? Most ISP\s don't give a sh*t .. until the sh*ts are very deep .And what if he/she was using some kind of proxy ?You'll contact the wrong ISP and the result will be the same .. a big fat zero :-)
I think the only way to deal with these guys are .. not to deal at all, and just protect your servers.
whatever 12-23-2004, 04:17 AM You have his/her contact information... try going to the police over it. Or more simply, block his/her IP address.

lol Nice Nice...
crackmp3z 12-27-2004, 01:54 PM If something ever happened to my website I would see how much damage and measure from there...Is best not to gain enemies ...but in your position i can see jealously from others ..make sure u keep running Linux.
Cyberspeed_Mark 12-27-2004, 03:17 PM LOL
The funny thing is, he probably used his own credit card, too.

Do you run APF and BFD??
WireNine 12-27-2004, 06:26 PM This is why I'd always call up the client and confirm their registration right after they signup, even if you offer instant activation, it is always a good idea to call up the number provided and match it with the number given to your merchant account provider.

Do you make any money ? I mean if I call all the hundreds of people on other continents that would be quite expensive.

use Internet telephony (www.dialpad.com for exemple) ;)
JoeRed 12-28-2004, 12:15 PM Looks like the "hacker" did not move on.
Go to his site, you will see:
"I o N
Defaced By BaNdIt__-"
*sigh
kelvinklay 12-28-2004, 12:38 PM the message cannot be treated as a threatened message.
dkitchen 12-28-2004, 02:57 PM We get stuff like that all the time, generally from people who upload MP3 hosting sites, anything illegal really.
I wouldn't worry, just take it with a pinch of salt.

freakb0y 12-29-2004, 05:50 AM In situations where someone threatens your server, the worst thing you can do is to reply to them. Hackers love a challenge...don't give it to them.
Take all of their information that you can and keep it on hand. Blocking his IP would be a good idea, but probably not that effective, since IPs are easily changed.
RofyHost 12-29-2004, 06:34 AM Hello everybody and thank you for your much appreciated inputs, I got a firewall and some security updates installed by my host and it seems to be fine, no worries :)
RofyHost 12-29-2004, 05:29 PM Hello everyone,
the hacker has exploited a bug in HelpCenterLive that I was using to change the index page,
I have restablish the index page, deleted helpcenterlive and deleted all hacker traces,
I am posting to advise to all of those who are using HCL!!
FREE scripts ?? well I will rethink before using them again!
All the best,
