How could you tell if a hosting company is a reseller or not?

Also are there any dif. if the co. is a reseller?

I would suggest asking them.

You can try traceroute and whois. Although they won't always find the reseller, but the best solution is to ask the host themselves. An honest host will tell you the truth.

I dont think you would have a problem going with a reseller as long as you get good support.
Like with any host, reseller or not check them out before you buy.
As far as knowing if they are a reseller I would suggest asking them also most will tell you the truth if they are honest.

A good reseller will usually be better than a poor host.

Just because someone owns a server does not mean they will provide good service.

Well its not a good idea to ask a host if they are a reseller. They would usually say no if even thou they are kind of a reseller. I bet 80% of webhost are resellers. selling off space from deicated servers or coloc there servers.

I'd have to disagree with that somewhat, Johnny. I've never had a host decline to say if they were a reseller, or who they resold... and if they did, they'd be history in my book.

I rarely have to ask, as a traceroute, Internic records, etc. -- all things you should research when chosing a host, anyway -- along with general knowledge of who's where, usually tell the story. But on occasions where I have asked, I've always gotten a straight answer.

As to how many hosting companies out there are resellers, that's an interesting question. I know there are a great many of them; but their presence in the industry as a whole, I have seen no figures on.

Does anyone have numbers on this?

et,

The problem is that there are some hosts who will refuse to reveal outright that they're resellers, despite all the traceroutes/IP blocks/parent company checking stuff you can throw at them. Those companies are the ones to be avoided.

I've never thought about the % of the industry made up by resellers. 80% seems to be pretty high. I think it's definitly more than 65 though

I found this kind of funny actually, but I came across a host that looked pretty good but resembled another hosting company so I asked if they were a reseller for them. They said No we are not resellers we just co locate a server eith them.

Well I went and looked on the main companies web site and right smack on their reseller information page it listed this so called not a reseller company as one of their top resellers. They dont even offer co location as it turns out. I dont mind if someone is a reseller, when people ask me I tell em, but I found it kind of shady that they lied about it.

Course thats just my .02 cents.

Good ressellers won't hide that they are ressellers bcos i don't think there is anything bad if anyone is reseller but is providing good services and their customers are happy. Sp they should not have any problem in telling that f you ask them.
