I tried to get a problem fixed with connecting to any sites in their datacenter when using sympatico.ca as my isp. Considering sympatico.ca is a rather large canadian isp I thought they might fix this but they havn't in over a week now and I've talked to 3 techs in total now through icq which is my only means to contact them other then phone now.

I sent a tech an icq with the trace route information I had
Target Name: rackshack.net

They did a return trace route and they had the same problem
Tracing route to Guelph-ppp3515084.sympatico.ca [206.172.238.241]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 3 ms 2 ms ev1hou-2600-1.ev1.net [207.218.193.1]
2 23 ms 11 ms 26 ms tayhou-223-13.ev1.net [207.218.223.13]
3 72 ms 18 ms 18 ms tayhou-223-1.ev1.net [207.218.223.1]
4 7 ms 6 ms 8 ms p1-1-0-0.a03.hstntx01.us.ra.verio.net [128.241.9
.245]
5 * * * Request timed out

Now I they told me that
unfortunately Verio is outside of our network and therefore our control
and replied with
well so it's going to be down forever?

This was their solution
if you know how to poison the route through verio's network you could give that a try

Ever since the attack I've had this problem and rackshack I guess seems to think it's fine for some isp's not to be able to view anything in their datacenter.

I thought maybe taking it here which actually works may get rackshack to do something about this.

Thats the same idea that I had. I am trying to get Rackshack to remove a spam website from the network(www.massmail.ru). I hope that you have better luck than me.

Thanks always,
ASA

What really gets me is how I am able to still check mail sometimes and go on irc servers in rackshack's datacenter

Are you having trouble connecting to your sites in any other way than ping or trace?

I'm fine with any normal service and as RackShack has stated on their message board in the network status section, they have ping and trace blocked currently in an effort to fight a persistant hacker attempt..

Shortconfused?

I can't view any websites in the rackshack datacenter most of the day, the odd time it's up for 2-5 minutes thats about it.

I don't see how this is rackshacks problem, or how this problem tells you that RS doesn't like Canada? The problem looks to be with Time Warner TeleCom, which isn't rackshack. They are a bandwidth provider. We were having this problem as well, however it seemed to have cleared up now.

Well the tech just kinda said meh, informing someone who could actually get this fixed would of been a nice thing.

Just thought that I might add,

Im from canada, and never had a problem accessing RS servers...

Man this sounds ridiculous ? are you guys making this up? no hosting company would just say 'oh well we can't fix it' if a route to canada was down ..

I guess you just get what you pay for

If RackShack is a verio customer, they can contact Verio and have them look into the problem. You sent them traceroutes which should be all they need. If they are not a Verio customer, and Verio is having problems peering with their provider it might be more difficult.

Also, since RackShack is up, and others are able to get to their sites, you may want to consider complaining to your ISP as well. They can try to work on it from one end, while RackShack works on it from the other end.

Looks like they fixed it, It just took quite a while to do it. Well atleast I hope it's gonna stay up this time. Why I didn't think it was my isp was because I was still able to access some parts of the server just not all of them and the fact everyone else could view everything made it not a server problem either.

Just so you don't think you're going crazy, we had the same problem with a client hosted at rackshack whom was in Canada.

Sympatico may be a huge isp, but remember this about sympatico:

1. Their dns is total bullsh*t, you can be in one part of the country and get name dns assigned to another.

2. They dont have any static ip addresses that i know of, meaning they reconnect and bam, they've got a new ip.

3. They've got one of the largest abusive user bases in canada, they have no way of controlling them, and their dns is setup in such a manner that if someone does abuse you have to ban almost all of sympatico.

I know tons of providers which openly ban all of sympatico, and a LOT of IRC servers, and i know tons who wish they could, but they just have too many users from sympatico :(.

but they just have too many users from sympatico

Which is why sympatico has so many abusive users. MSN is the same way here in US IMHO. But I don't think we want to go there.

A lot of abusive users come from sympatico for a few reasons.
In the end what it boils down to is because of Sympatico's totally screwd up DNS setups, and dynamic ip addresses, spammers know (or possibly don't) that they wont ever get busted. It's not that sympatico necessarily has more spammers, they just never get busted and disconnected, so they do a lot more damage.
