View Full Version : And the most reliable host is....
svejar 02-11-2002, 03:57 AM Got your attention, heh?
OK, been around here for a while, and I've gotta say - this is an excellent place: good advice, and a healthy(?) amount of paranoia about which host to choose.
I've tried to assemble a list of "good" hosts - those that seem to get above average on the "niceness" scale:
Myacen
Downtown Host
Dimension 8
Tera Byte
Nirmani
Phenominet
Ventures Online
Aletia
GearHost
Hosting Matters
Site5.com
3-95.com (everybody seems happy with Gary...)
HostCulture (a little help(?) from Jorge from Downtown Host,
Ventures Online servers - should be good)
Agree?
What do you say? There's got to be more?!?
My issue is: new companies joining this forum must have a tough time going up against these, considering the reputation they've built. You see a lot of these services posting offers with only a couple of posts under their belt. Does anyone try them out? Or are they doomed to keep "giving" away free/dirt cheap/"special offer" hosting? Would especially like some input from you "Newbies" out there. How does it feel starting out?

edit: I'm gonna add and extend to this list as we go along. If you disagree let me know.
Jedito 02-11-2002, 04:23 AM I'm glad to be there, but you can't forget venturesonline.com :)
<<edited typo >>
I don't think it's hard for a decent new company to break out -- look at Gear Host.
I know Nirmani offers nice packages, but the content (in English) on the main corporate site was a mite too haphazard for my comfort level. Presentation goes a long way when it comes to competing with the so-called "big guys." (Hey, if Nirmani wants a decent copy editor ... I could use 300 MB of space ;) )
Aletia deserves an honorable mention for being nice. I've been with them since May 2001, and while I've heard things are hairy for newer customers, the people at Aletia were always friendly to me. I haven't needed support in a long time (good sign), so I can't comment on Aletia's current state.
GeorgeC 02-11-2002, 05:29 AM Don't forget Rackspace.com for dedicated and IMO remarkablehosting for private servers.
Graeme 02-11-2002, 09:11 AM Hiya, I just popped in to say a few words on Dimension 8's behalf, I've been a customer with them for about a year now and I have no complaints. A year ago I didn't know a thing about ISP's or webhosting providers and felt kinda embaressed constantly asking people what the hell a DNS was :stickout but I found Dimension 8 and they sorted everything out for me (They still do admittedly) but I've only had some very rare instances of downtime but I and the other clients were warned in advance about it. They've been very reliable for me :)
Chicken 02-11-2002, 10:27 AM svein j., have you come here from FWS? Regardless, good to see you here...
Graeme 02-11-2002, 10:34 AM Heh I'm a complete newbie ;)
Or so it says below my name.
svejar 02-11-2002, 10:37 AM That's right Chicken - Newbie's in da house!
Seriously think this is going to be my new "time suck". Have spent a lot of time at Anandtech, but after a while you get kind of fed up with the AMD/Intel and nVidia/ATI "discussions".
Consider me a refugee for a while. And go easy on me, eh?

timdorr 02-12-2002, 12:35 PM I'll wholeheartedly give my vote for nirmani.net. Communication has never been a problem with them and they've always been speedy and helpful with my problems.
The hosting itself is very fast and responsive and i can rarely tell the difference in speed compared to hosting it on my own machine (when i was remotely accessing it at least, http://localhost can't be beat ;) ).
I think they're probably the best package of service and support I've seen in a while.
Good luck choosing!
dektong 02-12-2002, 12:37 PM I wonder why I am not in the list :D
cheers,
pgrote 02-12-2002, 12:58 PM Has to be on the list. Their service is dynamite and their reliability is fantastic.

danushman 02-12-2002, 01:00 PM I've had great -- great results with Site5.com ;)
Also have had fun with Can-host.com and know people who used and loved Burlee.com.
svejar 02-12-2002, 03:05 PM Excellent - it's great to see that people follow up on this thread.
I think it's safe to say that quite a few people seem happy with their hosts! For a newbie like me (and others!) that's good news. a lot of threads are posted by people, just like myself, building their first web site and looking for that "right" host. And at least I got confused. You can look around, and something bad is gonna pop up about all hosting services: support is bad, unreliable financial situation, too large, too small.
Please keep posting here if your satisfied with your host, let everybody know. You people have a lot of experience that we all would love to hear about.
Great work!

A lot of good hosts are out there ;)
After you have narrowed it down to a few you'd like to concider, try some hosting directories for comments on them by their users.
A few good ones are
Webhostdir.com
TopHosts.com
FindSp.com
and others.
Dan
pgrote 02-12-2002, 03:09 PM I don't trust hosting directories at all.
They are advertising whores ... well, most of them.
That is why when I found Webhosting talk I just about wept. Honest reviews from people and their experiences shared. It was great!

Sorry it took so long to reply, I just noticed our name on here, but yes to both of those :)
Jorge and I are running HostCulture, and yes both HC and DTH servers are with VO (definatley a great provider if you're looking for shared/dedicated hosting)
Granted we are fairly new so there is little to no information from customers on here, but so far our customers seem to be satisfied :)
bitserve 02-14-2002, 11:54 AM The most reliable host is definitely localhost. :)
Jeff Rambo 02-15-2002, 08:00 AM I'll send someone in the direction of Site5 any day. Currently with GearHost, still satisfied, albeit not as much as before due to a few platform problems (who would of figured I'd have so many problems with a php script working on a Win2k box), but we're getting across the hurdles being life-long *nix types. Anyhow, they're good to go.
DouginSpain 06-17-2002, 01:01 PM Hi all,
Just about fed up with Cedant.com and am ready to jump ship.
Because of the time differnces, could anyone let me know if any of these are in Europe.
Myacen
Downtown Host
Dimension 8
Tera Byte
Nirmani
Phenominet
Ventures Online
Aletia
GearHost
Hosting Matters
Site5.com
3-95.com (everybody seems happy with Gary...)
HostCulture (a little help(?) from Jorge from Downtown Host,
Ventures Online servers - should be good)
Many thanks.
Doug.
coight 06-17-2002, 01:10 PM We are in Australia ;)
bambenek 06-17-2002, 01:12 PM I just want to know how many of them have liability insurance...
Chicken 06-17-2002, 01:25 PM I just want to know why Mr. Doug chose a 4 month old thread to ask about hosts in Europe? :D
Thread is old but I want to suggest "remarkablehosting" to be inserted in the list. They seem to be best VPS host around.
(Someone else suggested this too).
Uptime, stability and support is excellent there :)
Mac
viGeek 06-17-2002, 02:21 PM HostRocket.com is also a good choice. I have had a excellent expirience with hostrocket & venturesonline :)
genaldi 06-17-2002, 02:26 PM Been with Hosting Matters for about 7 months, can't complain at all. Their service is top notch in every aspect!
Best of luck,
David
XTNet 06-17-2002, 03:00 PM cant forget xhostx.com on there, best hosting company i've ever worked with.
Myacen --- nahh, the owners didn't seem to know much about their servers. Plus it took them ages to set up my subdomains and I had to ask only a few hundred times to get them around to doing it... aRGh!
Hiccups 06-17-2002, 03:40 PM Wisehosting.net (http://wisehosting.net/)
Had a few episodes of downtime last month, but not for long. Overall I really really like Wisehosting. Support is very good! :D
I also recommend SimpleUrl.com (http://simpleurl.com/)
Have had a site with them for over a year and only once had any downtime at all that I know of, and only a few hours that one time. Great support there too! :D
I have tried a few others too, but didn't like them. Not getting into that.
I just want to know how many of them have liability insurance... Well.. we didn't make the list :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: but none the less... we have insurance and I would ?hope? any of the reputable companies do as well. It's a question not asked often enough and yet another expense rarely considered
chrisb 06-18-2002, 03:58 AM Aletia? Are u kidding? They are not even in the same class with some of the great hosts on your list; and sites are easily hacked there.
I'd would definitely add dreamquest to your list.
Jessicam 06-18-2002, 06:05 AM Although this thread is a few months old............
My vote goes to DownTownHost (http://www.downtownhost.com/)
Jorge provides EXCELLENT customer service. He's very quick to answer. I couldn't be happier.
Jessica :)

Correct - uptime has been excellent. Whenever I am on the PC I have found that localhost has been up

Lol :D
fx1024 06-18-2002, 08:26 AM The server 10 is down more than 24 hours!
According to your advertisement in the main page about 99,9% uptime, you must have the servers up and running continuously for the next 65 years!
My sites are still in the development stage, but after this incident I have serious doubts about if I gonna use alwayswebhosting for their "live" operation...
Do you believe that the the response I've got from the AWH was the appropriate for such a message?
fx1024 06-18-2002, 08:43 AM Sorry it's here by mistake :)
