Hi guys,

I just launched my web site and i need hosting companies to submit their site to my directory of web hosts. I have a few already added but wanted to expand the listings to make it a better resource. I also urge any of you to signup for our forums as well so that you can interact with the community once it grows a bit. I have 1,000,000 million banner impressions in the works on a highly targeted webmaster resource network of sites and will actively be promoting as much as possible so the site should be doing well within a month or so. Follow the link below to add your web hosting company.

Oh no, not another one...

I know you are not really asking for critique, but:
I think you will never be able to offer something of value for the visitor.

You need a searchform where people can select features like Perl/ASP/databases etc

This also mean you need to create a real database, now it seems like you are using freetext searches...

Email host submission is also way too inconvinient

Don't mean to rack down on your site - just being rational about the current flood of hosting directories...

At least, for me, it didn't.

Yes, I might add, I also like the design. Wish I had those design skills :)

well, i don't mind the critique but i might as well have placed it in the web site reviews for the responses i got on the board...

yes, i know there was alot of sites already out there doing this same thing blah blah, find me a niche that isn't, come on!

besides, my initial intention was to start a hosting company myself but I just don't have the resources or time... i already had the domain and it seemed to suit a web hosting directory fine...

i actually bartered my programming skills to get the design done by http://www.nfusegfx.com

ASPCode.net :: i'm sorry but critique is fine but your assumptions about my site were probably about 80% wrong... first off, i hate people who open their mouth before knowing 1 freaking thing about what they are commenting on.

?? Who are you to judge what is of value to the visitors of any site? If 1 person finds a web host because of my site then i succeeed. ENUFF SAID!

As I said in my post, i have just launched the site to build the hosts into the site. What good is a search tool without hosts to search for. 90% of sites don't launch with their full feature set. Yes, that will be something done in the future.

I'm sorry but the last time i checked MySQL was a real database, and before you start spouting programming / database design, I do it for a living, i am a 4GL RDBMS (relational database management systems) programmer as well as analyst for the programming language Progress (progress.com), which just happens to hold the market share for embedded database applications. 95% of my site is coming from a database.

Again, a feature that will be added soon, most likely to allow the constant update from the hosting company so they may enter sales, features regularly.

I'm sorry, but the internet in general is flooded. So, to even bring up the fact that there is a flood of hosting directories is like saying... ooh, another ASP wannabe... oops sorry, i busted on your programming language. Its just that whole flood of ASP sites i have been seeing, oh, that's right... what's ASP? lol,, j/k

btw, nice job programming your ASP resource site in PHP

Woooooooooooh there, tiger!! You were not being attacked. Don't get so defensive.

Possitive critism is a *good* thing and you should take it as such. When someone goes to me and says:

Dan,
I think you need a more indepth search feature on your site.

I don't tell them to f-off. I say thanks and that I will think about their suggestion.

No one here was trying to hurt your feelings, but rather help you chug along.

i'm not disregarding criticism, people just make too many assumptions and quite frankly he was challenging my intelligence for opening another web hosting directory...

last time i checked ASPcode, that might be where you get most of your hits for your um hosting company.

critique my site all day, but don't make assumptions of how my site is operating...

if you will notice, i agreed with him on the fact that i needed a better search engine, as well as a submission / user based feature for hosting companies.

Ok. We all got different goals with our websites.

What I meant was considering the "flood of webhosting directories" ( that's the header of this thread, nothing I made up: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35420 ) you really need to make something better than the existing already established ones.

And as for the database/search form thing - I mean you will need to define your database fields NOW like
ASP ( Y/N )
MySQL ( Y/N )

Otherwise the database won't be searchable in a useful way. My assumption is that since you allow free text submissions you might get problems later trying to match submissions to such an database - and a database structure like that is needed to perform searches with good performance.

I might be wrong, you might have a great database structire beneath, but was led to believe you only used blobs since there was no formbased submission. And yes, MySQL is a real database engine, what I meant was if ( not saying that you do ) you are using just textfields then you will have problems.

You are reading between the lines, or maybe my engslish is not as good as it should be, I am NOT challenging your intelligence.

Regarding your comment about me and my website, it's so childish I wont get into that.

Might just be me, but your Hostbuddies site is timing out for me at the moment (4:09am from Washington State).

I'll take another look some other time.

hostbuddie,
realy nice lay out, but i didnt check out the rest of the site.

one thing i have lerned is not ot trust to much...
im finding this out the hard way as the hosts them selves are rating them selves on my site(if your doing that)

anyway from one web host search site to the other i wish you the best of luck.

Host Buddies,

Don't take it to heart.....you'll find that most of the time the people that criticize you are jealous because you have something they don't or because they don't have the necessary skills to be able to create something similar.

hi guys,

I have been working on some obvious changes to the site and appreciate all the suggestions, etc.

i have replaced the email host submission with a form based add/modify hosting company listing. that way, the hosting company can modify their listing at any time, which will take full advantage of the specials feature that allow you to post any deals, etc along with your normal listing. I also require a person adding their hosting company to become a member of the forums. I did this for 2 reasons... hopefully one is to bring hosting companies as well as webmasters together much like this site has done. the other reason is for validation purposes, if need be using the forum software in conjunction with the add host feature i can ban a user if they have disrupted the community in a bad way... such as spamming, etc.

i have also added a more advanced search feature to allow searching of hosts that have php, mysql, etc.

there will be an ongoing process to make this a better site so please be patient.

[vortech] - i just emailed you regarding these new changes, etc. my wife just had our second child and I was gone for a little over a week. when I got back i decided to make better changes to the site and rather than going ahead and adding all the submissions i got, i emailed everyone telling them how to do it themselves.

thanks for all the suggestions guys...
