View Full Version : Rockliffe email and virtual domains

We're thinking of hosting with Intermedia and moving several virtual domains to a server there. Problem is, IM uses Rockliffe and it appears that it is impossible (acc to their TS)to set it up to handle info@domain1.com; info@domain2.com; info@domain3.com. Been with half a dozen other hosts, Unix & NT, and this has always been possible... hence all my clients using info@theirdomain.com, forwarded to their respective ISP's.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but if anyone has a workaround for this-- or know someone who hosts there and has solved this problem some clever way, we'd be delighted to hear it. Can't have everybody reprint their bus cards, ads, letterheads just for this.

Thanks.

Generally, this is done by creating a username (info2, info3, info4 for example), and aliasing info to info2. I'm sure they can do it, then forward email from info2 > ISP email.

May not have been totally clear about the situation -- there is ONE primary domain (say.... primedomain.com) and secondary domains under that, like domain2.com; domain3.com, etc.

If mail is sent to john@primedomain.com, it's either left in that mailbox or forwarded to John@hisISP.com, depending on settings.

Along comes John@domain2.com and there's already a "john" on this primary (and only) mail server to the IP that both johns are registered.... John@domain2.com has to change his web site, his business cards, all of his advertising, to become JohnW@domain2.com (or whatever).

Does that clarify? Sorry for the confusion, but, well, it is very confusing!

Well, I understood you the first time, but obviously you didn't understand me (I probably didn't explain it very well). This is how most servers work. There can't be two users, both named John, on the server. Every server I've ever used has been like this. Luckily there is a work around...

You have john@domain1.com and that user has taken 'john'. For the second john@domain2.com, create a user called 'john2'. You then create an alias of john@domain2.com to 'john2'.

Side note:
The only time this might not work is if if the domain isn't actually set up on the server and you're doing some funny DNS forwarding to subfolders. I don't think that is the case here, though one thing you said leads me to believe that these domains may not be fully set up on the server. Even so, I'd still think it should be possible to configure this so it works.

If IM can't give you what you need, you might want to look elsewhere, but it seems they should be able to do this.

This can be done. We use Rockliffe and haven't had any problems with it yet.

The reason it works is that if you have virtual domains using the same IP address, the login becomes the full e-mail address. The server parses the login and logs into the proper virtual domain.

Thanks! You're right, Chicken, the domains are v.v.v. new there; will try again. We wanted to see if this host was usable before we spent too much time/money on it. Barry, it's reassuring to know it's possible....
Will have another go. Great forum!
