Found this on the net...

Quick Eye Exam...

This will blow your mind...!

Just do it - don't cheat!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try this its actually quite good.

But don't cheat!

Count the number of F's in the following text:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Managed it?

Scroll down only after you have counted them!

OK?

How many?

Three?

Wrong, there are six - no joke!

Read again!

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

The reasoning is further down...

The brain cannot process the word "OF".

Incredible or what?

Anyone who counts all six F's on the first go is a genius
Three is normal.

My head hurt after this.. I only saw 3.. I am no genius :bawling:

Got 4....changing Nick to "Almost Genius"

It doesn't have much to do with the word "OF" per se; rather, the brain discards stop words automatically since they generally contribute little to the total meaning.

If you asked people to count how many times the letter "E" appears in "ELEPHANTS ARE THE LARGEST LAND-BOUND CREATURES LIVING IN THE WORLD" you'd likely see a similar result.

3, I guess I'm no genius either.

I saw 6 on the first try. I'm far from being a genius, though. :homer:

When I fist saw a similar joke to this, in the soloution it said that it was because the brain read "OF" as "OV" because that's how you say it, hense think it.

Douglas

(btw: I got 5..and I alredy knew the soloution :( )

Add me to the idiot's club :D

I scanned the thing for 5 minutes and never even noticed the "OF's" it's like they were not even there then all of the sudden bam there they are. That's pretty cool have to try that one on my wife!! Hopefully she wont get as mad as she did with the "SCARY" post I am still in the dog house after that one!!

Being blessed, apparently, with a brain that works much slower than most, I saw all six.

By the way, I don't buy that "OV" explanation. Seems much more likely to be simply that in reading you tend to scan a sentence, not read every word. So the lesser important words like "OF" are missed. Actually, I'd think the trick would be more effective if the paragraph were written in lowercase instead of uppercase, because it would encourage faster scanning. People tend to identify words, not individual letters, when reading; and do so by scanning the tops of the letters that make up the word. Uppercase words force you to look at the individual letters.

Which, of course, is what you should be doing anyway when you're asked to count how many times a particular letter is used! :)

I counted six, too. I guess that my brain processes the word "of" just fine.

It's true that OF = OV which eventually gets read by the brain as OPH.

Try this one:

Timothy Tittes took two T's to tie two tails to two tall trees. How many T's in that?

Hmm.. trick question now that I look at it.. by capitalizing the "T" in "How many T's in that?", you could mean how many capital t's, how many t's in the first sentence reguarless of case, or you could mean how many t's in the word "that".. no fair!

Dylan
02-10-2002, 10:43 PM
:D, okay, and if I do it like this:

TIMOTHY TITTES TOOK TWO T'S TO TIE TWO TAILS TO TWO TALL TRIES. HOW MANY T'S IN THAT?

I still think it's 16.

I got 16. not including "HOW MANY T'S IS THAT" which then it would be 19....

Im not a genius by any means.. But i cant see how so many of you could miss the F's.. Maybe if you HEARD it said.. But if the letter f is right in front OF you... hehe :) Ohwell. One of those mysterys. Kind of like I can never say that peter piper picked a pack of pepers 5 times fast ;)

I must be a genius, I got it the first time:

$quiz = 'FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS';

$this_many += ($quiz =~ s/F/HERE/gi);

print "I count $this_many F's, I'm a genius?\n";

.. that still leaves 2 possibilities. And the way it's worded leads me to think you're asking how many t's are in the word "that".. so, 16 if it's not a trick question, 2 if it is ;)

Dylan
02-11-2002, 08:44 PM
JDF, you got the cookie the first time around :D

There are only 2 T's!

It's a trick question. The question is:

How many T's in "that" ?

NOT

How many T's in "Timothy Tittes... blah blah...

cperciva

You'd drive Hofstadter apoplectic with silliness like that. Use-mention distinction, remember? If you were referring to "that", you should have put quotes around "that", to indicate that you were referring to the word rather than using it.

"Yields falsehood when preceeded by its quotation yields falsehood when preceeded by its quotation" doesn't make any sense at all, but '"Yields falsehood when preceeded by its quotation" yields falsehood when preceeded by its quotation' makes a great deal of sense.

Back to the "of" thing... I had an English teacher way back in high school who taught me when proofing text to read it backwards.

For spelling, start with the last word and look at each going bakcward. For making sure individual sentences are constructed correctly, start by reading the last sentence, then the 2nd to the last, etc.

This forces you to process individual pieces rather than processing as one large object.

How many T's in "Timothy Tittes... blah blah...

Shouldn't it say: "How many T's are in that?" as "How many T's in that?" doesn't sound like proper grammatical syntax to me?

You blew my mind!

Dylan
02-11-2002, 09:43 PM
You could say "How many T's are in that?" if you want. Doesn't matter. It still sounds the same, and you'll still get the same answer.

Timothy Tittes took two T's to tie two tails to two tall trees. How many T's are in that?

or

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS. HOW MANY T'S ARE IN THAT?

cperciva :D, I put the quote over the "that" this time to try and illustrate the answer through the question. I am not supposed to. You supposed to say this sentence (without quoting/emphasizing anything) and/or ask the person to write it down and then let them count...

akuo
02-12-2002, 09:25 AM
Of course the "That" thing is more of a trick question, where the "of" thing is a perception issue.

As for the "Yields..." quote... aiii my head is still spinning :)

Very clever indeed.

"How many T's are there in that?"

I'd look at it in the same as the differance between " and ' in php. With "in that" I would see it direct: " in: 'that' " Whereas with the extra words "are (there) in that" it would use "that" like a variable, so that (hehe) it would hve the value of the whol sentance before..
