View Full Version : This may be a really stupid question...

but is it okay to buy a reseller account for yourself with no intention of reselling? I've been reading the threads on Voxtreme and Cyberwings and their resellers plans are what I need just to run my own websites. I'm not interested in reselling and know nothing about the business (nor do I care to), but are there legal ramifications or anything funky that I need to know before signing up for one?

Also, is it risky to run a site on a reseller account? I read about unreliable reseller accounts from the end users on here. I just want my sites to be up 99.9whatever % of the time. I don't want to think about webhosting, just working on my sites --that's all.

By the way... *gush* ecommercediscovery.com rocks!

I signed up with them only a couple weeks ago to host my adult site after learning about them on this board. After a rocky first day, my site has been up and running great since. ^_^ I love this forum!

That's exactly what I wanted to do, and did.

Voxtreme had a reseller special available enabling me to host as many of my sites as I wanted to.

Go to the Voxtreme forums and check the presales question area.

So far I haven't seen any host who doesn't allow buying resold accounts for yourself. It wouldn't make much sense: how could he tell if the site is for you or a client of you?

There's quite a few who advertise here that require you to sell accounts in order to retain a discount.

Astonishing. Who? I wonder how they check if the account is resold...

These two, while not exactly what I was looking for:

do not appear to offer a flat rate for the sort of domain hosting that ochiba requires. Myself as well actually.

There is a difference to what I was referring to when speaking of Voxtreme.

I think a host whose reseller plan consists of percentage discounts on their regular hosting plans might object to you getting the reseller discount and using the accounts for personal sites. The discount might be offered with the understanding that you'd be doing a reasonable volume of resold accounts, rather than just getting a discount for personal use.

The reseller whose method of reselling consists of "X domains for Y dollars" would probably prefer you use the accounts for personal use. Fewer individuals with access to the server means a little better security, and less chance of getting a spammer or TOS violator.

I've seen a few hosts that make you pay to resell. And then others where you have to buy multiple accounts to resell, so I wasn't quite sure if there was something legal that you had to do to resell. Thanks Lats, I visited the voxtreme board. The only thing I was worried about with them was the downtime complaints, but I'll wait to hear from them. Cyberwings sounded great until someone explained the 98% uptime guarantee. I don't think 14 hours downtime a month is good at all. That's terrible!

It seems like a lot of web hosting companies make you pay for their most expensive plan, also known as the reseller plan, in order to get additional reseller priced plans. That way it's generally not cost effective to host your own site on their reseller plan if you only have one site. But if you have multiple sites...

But I wouldn't mind if you use our reseller plan to host your own multiple sites. Not that we have a reseller plan. I'm just saying, as a part owner of a host, I wouldn't mind. :)

And I'd hope that our reseller accounts would have the same uptime as our regular accounts.

I don't see why a host would object to you getting a reseller account with them, and than hosting your own sites. If in doubt, you might want to ask first (this is a good idea anyway, as you'll get an idea of how quickly they respond to emails).

I would think that usually the only way a reseller account would be cheaper, is when you need lots of space and bandwidth.

If that's the case, it doesn't seem trying to save 28 cents or whatever should be much of a factor. Why fool with it?

If your site is that big and important, isn't it more desirable to spend the time on the site than on the reseller plan, given the small cost savings?
