View Full Version : Turn off requests replies
appletreats 02-09-2002, 11:34 PM please please please please pleaaaaaaaaasssseeeeee turn off replies in the requests forum. Many of them just say things lile "I've PMed you" or "Check your email!". And it makes it hard to keep track of which requests are new and which ones bounced back up from a reply. No more replies!
I find it rather annoying seeing the "I've PMed you" as well, however I find it even more annoying keeping track of whom you have and haven't emailed or PMed. What a headache!!!!
There's a little check box in the reply area that allows you to turn off email notification.
You could always adjust that setting in the control panel to have it turned off by default. It seems you have it on.
Lats...
serve-you 02-11-2002, 12:34 AM I'll put my vote in for replies to be turned off again. The requests forum was a much nicer place to visit before.

Whoops - looks like I was thinking of something else there :o
Lats...
Rewdog 02-11-2002, 02:12 AM turn them off
Rew's Vote
cperciva 02-11-2002, 02:28 AM I'll add my vote in here as well. Too many people offer their services in response to requests which their services clearly don't satisfy; unless moderation was to be tightened considerably (which I don't think anyone has time for) it's better just to make requests a non-reply forum.
method5 02-11-2002, 09:12 AM Log into the control panel (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/usercp.php?s=) and turn them off yourself...
Chicken 02-11-2002, 10:20 AM method5, thery are talking about additional post being made in response to posted threads. The forum used to be locked, members could start threads, but no one could reply.
alchiba 02-11-2002, 11:24 AM Vote: Turn off replies.
SoftWareRevue 02-11-2002, 11:30 AM 1. Leave on the replies.
2. Put the sticky back up explaining to *not* reply with "Email sent, et.al"
3. Reprimand those that can't follow that simple instruction.
ipkavb 02-11-2002, 05:16 PM ipkavb presents a suggestion
Perhaps replies could be made on as Soft Ware Review suggests but could it be possible to not have posts move up when they are replied to? So they stay in order based on when they were first posted? Surely this must somehow be possible.

Nice idea. Not sure if it's possible to do that easiliy in VBulletin, but otherwise I vote for that
cperciva 02-11-2002, 05:23 PM if ipkavb's suggestion is implemented, can we also exclude the requests forum from the "view new posts"?
mdrussell 02-11-2002, 05:32 PM I agree with SWR's post - leave the replies on, but as c.perciva suggests, moderate the forum to a greater degree.
Maybe hire an extra mod or two, someone who doesn't represent a hosting company and is a reputable and long time member of this board, who could just moderate the advertising section?
ASPCode.net 02-11-2002, 05:37 PM Moderation won't solve it as there will always be new people and cheaters bumping threads in sophisticated ways. I think a technical solution is needed.
appletreats 02-11-2002, 05:42 PM Yeah, if your post includes "PM" or "email" and "I've" or "I have" and "you", it gets the BOOT. Or maybe some sort of word limit, like 10 or 15 words. Nothing worth reading in the request form would have that few words. And if their post is rejected, it should explain why. Like, "Please do not post that you have PMed or emailed this person." and "Don't use so few words. If you're saying that you have emailed/messaged the person, don't waste our time by posting it". Or maybe show these messages BEFORE they post.
Oh yeah, and ipkavb's idea is happy.
Chicken 02-11-2002, 06:43 PM We actually tried that, people just reworded the post and made it longer so it wouldn't get snagged by the censor. I have no opinion on it otherwise.
