View Full Version : New Control Panel, Staff Needed!
Ben Russell 02-09-2002, 06:25 PM I am developing a new control panel (Name is currently not publicly released), and we need some staff to help in the development. The CP will be written in Perl using a MySQL backend. We need the following people:
- A graphics designer that can make icons, logos, etc. for CP themes
- A Perl & CGI guru that knows a lot about Perl, how to manipulate files, access other programs using .cgi files, etc.
- A Red Hat Linux guru that, obviously, knows a lot about Red Hat Linux (which is what we are developing the CP for), adding users, monitoring bandwidth, the best programs to use, etc.
If you are available for any of these positions, please contact me by email (ben@legacy-network.com not my email for this forum account), or preferably ICQ (UIN: 42222203).
A little more about the CP, we are planning to allow it to set up subdomains automatically, emails, forwarders, autoresponders, cron jobs, FTP accounts, and monitor bandwidth usage at least.
Thanks for reading, and please contact me if you are available for any of the above positions.
smartmlp 02-09-2002, 11:52 PM I am one of the producer of this project.
The project will progress at a high pace, updates will be out all the time, so we need people on alot, and who can dovote alot of there time to the making of the CP. We plan that the first version of the CP will be out in atleast 6Months time (Or even Less , or more) Just some more:
- A graphics designer Will need to be ready to create more than one template, or "Style" and will need to devote alot of time.
- The Linux person must be prepared to reinstall programs serveral times during testing.
smartmlp 02-09-2002, 11:55 PM Oh, You will get paid :-P
Opon how much service you can provide.
Azaloth 02-10-2002, 03:57 AM I'm interested in the graphic designer position, but I'd like to ask you a few questions about the specifics of this project. Below is an example of my most recent work:

Hi,
Im your man :)
I've just finished writing my own helpdesk in perl/mysql and have my own template parser and sql modules. The template parser does stuff like:
<%if foo%> hello <%else%> goodbye <%endif%>
...and all sorts of other good stuff.
Anyway if interested please contact me at pwilson@wiredon.net
s,(\d{2}),chr $1,eg+print,if$_='877382696879783272798384737871';
Azaloth 02-10-2002, 05:42 PM What they failed to mention is that this is not a paid position. I ICQed him and he clarified that this is for "fun", "portfolio expansion" and "just to be nice" work only. Just wanted to give everyone the heads up.
I'd like to request that in the future people who post job ops please provide information about payment or the lack thereof. Thank you.
Good luck with your project,
-Andrei Zimiles

smartmlp 02-10-2002, 08:24 PM Azaloth Is wrong
This will require alot of help, when the control panel is out, only then will everyone be payed.
phpjames 02-10-2002, 09:18 PM Shady, very shady how you didnt make this clear to begin.
Ben Russell 02-10-2002, 10:39 PM Sorry about the confusion, I have set up the forums for our control panel and have posted on it more about paying the staff at the following URL:

WiredON.net 02-11-2002, 06:28 AM >>when the control panel is out, only then will everyone be payed.<<
Oh I see, so everyone spends ages building you a great control panel and then you say "hehe like we were really going to pay you"
Ben Russell 02-11-2002, 10:05 AM No, not really, but you're welcome not to help if that is your attitude.
Tranz 02-11-2002, 10:59 AM Ben,
I understand where you are comming from but, you have to understand where others are too.
With the way things are right now people are trying to grab onto anything that looks like a life raft. There are a select few that have the opportunity to stay home with mom and dad as they arent in the world on their own yet.
There are those of of like me that have a $2400 a month house payment and can not afford to spend the time with the hope of a return in the future.
In this case you should have an NDA send it out then drop people a fully designed business plan. This would show that you have gotten your act together and taken the time to think about the business. That would also include FULL 5 year financial plans as well.
This type of detail might get someone other than a kid to assist you in your project.
I'm not flaming you or saying that its not possible, but the "Buld it and they will come" attitude is what led to the downfall of a great deal of .comc and start-ups. Going down that road has lead us to where we are now in the economy as well as in new technology developments.
Offer real funds upfront based on time and you will get takers. Offering the "hopes" of something in the future doesnt put food on the table NOW..
Azaloth 02-11-2002, 05:39 PM Very well said, Tranz.
smartmlp,
I'm wrong? Here is what I was told over ICQ:
You have received a message!
Well, we currently do not plan on paying, were you expecting to get paid?
You have sent a message!
Whoah, I don't get it. Why would anyone work for you? Portfolio expansion? Your post on the boards didn't mention that it wasn't a paid position.
You have received a message!
Yes, a lot of people do things for portolio expansion, fun, just to be nice, etc.
Hence my "heads-up" post here, so that many of my fellow web designers don't waste their time thinking this is an actually job op. Please clarify such matters in the future. Thank you.

cyansmoker 02-11-2002, 08:45 PM ...and if Ben isn't the same guy, please disregard.
"People do it for fun" -> yes they write an open-source control panel for fun. Not a professionnal one.
Actually I just hope Ben isn't the guy who contacted me a couple times (and posted a message here, too) when I was looking (still am!) for volunteers for working on my control panel because in this case his business plan is:
"Hey these guys are about to build a CP for free!"
"Hey guys don't do that! Let's set up a company and do it for money!"
Again, Ben, if you're not that person (I have a broken brain sometimes), all apologies.
Ben Russell 02-11-2002, 10:11 PM Regarding me "clarifying" the job op, I never said or did not say that it would be a paid position, I simply posted on the forums and wanted to see if anyone would be willing to help.
cyansmoker: I am not sure what guy you are referring to, but I do not recall PMing you =)
smartmlp 02-12-2002, 12:10 AM We are in the process in making aggrements with the new Dev Team, the staff will be payed apon launch, it will be bassed on how many people sign up for the CP, how much work they did on the project.
