Rather than banning polls/surveys pretty much outright, would you consider a separate forum for them, like for Advertising?

I'm thinking of the recent "where do your customers come from" survey - that seems like it could have been useful information.

I agree. I was very interested in the thread, read down a few posts, then saw it was locked.

Very disappointing.

We originally did that for quite a few reasons, some of which escape me, but I do remember one particular reason : if you search back through the threads and look for the 125-post thread from Thinkhost you'll see precisely why that rule was instituted in the first place. (and no, the mods weren't around when that thread erupted).

That said, if we get enough requests for it we'll consider removing that rule, but the mods will keep a very close check on it.
