I just started experiencing some problems with the email server on my RAQ4i. Every now and then the mail server cuts out and when you try to connect to a POP3 account it gives a connection error.
Currently the only way to fix it is to go into the login to the admin section and go to 'Control Panel' and press the 'Save Changes' button which seems to reinitiate the service.
For starters is there a way to restart this manually through shell instead of going to into the control panel?
Second, anyhow have any ideas of any specific areas I should be looking into first to figure out what is happening.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is the error I receive:
Task 'name@domain.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Hi,
I have a raq4 and have been having the same problem and been getting that error.
I haven't yet worked out how to fix it but it seems to be Norton Antivirus that is doing it for a lot of our clients. I have tried it on numerous computers and that error only comes up when 'Scan Incoming Mail' is activated in the Norton Antivirus configuration.
People using Norton Internet Security don't seem to have the problem, only people who just have the Antivirus component.
By deactivating 'Scan Incoming/Outgoing Email' they can receive/send their email with no problems. Obviously this is not optimal so I have recommended that they upgrade to Norton Internet Security (which they really should have anyway if they don't have a firewall and have broadband).
One strange thing though is it's not confined to Cobalt servers. We also have a Win2003 server and the same thing happens when there is a large amount of email in the account. If there are only a couple of messages in the account they download ok...
Could it be the latest update of Norton AV has issues?
Hope this helps. If you discover anything else please share it.
Cheers.

We have been having this on all user accounts on our RaQ550. It started yesterday morning. Turning off Norton AV does not stop it. I have tried turning off the firewall also, but it keeps happening. Sometimes it stops further email download, sometimes the error messsage pops up but the email keeps downloading. Very strange.

Funny that we all started having the problem around the same time...
Hopefully someone has the answer

My ISP took a look at this and this is what they say:
The error that you have reported is a common error that occurs during a timeout with the mail server. These are normally caused by connectivity problems over busy networks, overworked servers or because of large or corrupt mails.
In this case I believe the problem to be caused by load on the
server. I was lucky/unlucky enough to experience problems whilst logged on checking your system (system slowed to a halt and then started again). When I looked at what the server was doing it had just run the spam and antivirus software against an incomming mail.
The problem has now stopped, but since there is only one main web site on this server I cannot imagine it is incapable of dealing with the needs of this one web site.

I don't think it's the fact that your Raq couldn't handle one single website. I have around a hundred sites on mine and it has only just started. I've had the server for a long time with no troubles.
As I mentioned in a previous post, it's strange that all of a sudden we are all experiencing the same problem. I think it's a bug on the server. Maybe they have been compromised...I've had a server hacked before... If your mail server is slow or not responding perhaps it's busy sending out millions of spam emails !?
I am considering getting a new server anyway as the Raq is now unsupported by Sun and is getting a little obscolete. Also I'm getting tired of dealing with server issues so a managed server is starting to sound appealing. My attitude used to be 'why pay when you can do it yourself' but time is better spent elsewhere.
Clients have reported that upgrading from Norton AV to Norton Internet Security has fixed the problem but maybe it's just coincidental...the problem was quite sporadic anyway and maybe went away.

The problem I'm experiencing is server side, so it's not a conflict with specific systems.
What is the best way to reinitiate the mail server through shell? Would anyone have any suggestions for a quick work around script that could reinitiate the mail server if it goes down? Maybe setup a cron job to check every 5 minutes or so?
Thanks.
