View Full Version : Hosting my own domains - right or wrong?
At some point and time I plan to have seven or eight domains (right now I have three). It's more cost-effective for me to purchase a reseller account for $30-40/month than pay $10/month for seven accounts.
I was wondering if this frowned upon by resellers or not. The host will get my money, and I save money. The only downside I see is that I'm on my own for tech support. I could also sell some space, but most of it will be occupied by me. Is that wrong?
Thank you for taking the time to read this,
Lain
It's a good idea, I've recently done the same thing myself as I have many domains I want to put up.
The tech support is not a problem, you won't be on your own.

MCHost-Marc 02-08-2002, 06:55 PM I don't see a problem with you hosting your own domains on a reseller plan. :)
mdrussell 02-08-2002, 06:59 PM I think most hosts will be happy to let you host your own domains on a reseller plan - we've had clients purchase a reseller plans just because they offer more space and bandwidth than our virtual offerings.
Of course, the best thing to do would be to check with the host first...

There is no shortage of reselling companies that at least are near the top of their industry.
TimPD 02-10-2002, 05:27 PM The only down side of reselling is you have to provide the support for the clients that you have. We had some clients that request us to provide the support for there clients under our name which we will do. But, The whole point of a reseller is to be out on your own. But, If you want to Lain you can give it a shot!.

Tim, the whole point of this thread is that Lain just wants to host his own domains, and not give support to other people.

hehe, Lats, I'm a girl :D
Thank you all for your prompt responses. I have another question now. You know how you get your own nameservers when you become a reseller? Does your domain have to be hosted with the host that you intend on buying an account with? For example, one of my domains is with JaguarPC, and I want to use that as a nameserver. If say, I go with MCHost, do I have to move that domain over to them?
And is it just me, or are Plesk control panels slow? I tried a demo out and it wouldn't load. I'm not familiar with Plesk; all I've used is CPanel.
cahostnet 02-11-2002, 10:19 AM Lain,
What you get is actually a virtual DNS name. Your ns name just points to their primary and secondary. It is best to have everything in one place this way everything you do in your control panel is changed in DNS without manually processing it.
However, if the domains are hosted in different places then you can choose which name server to use for each domain.

Whoops - sorry
I've tried the demo of plesk as well, quite slow - perhaps it was a bad day.

kmb999 02-11-2002, 04:35 PM Plesk is slow (especially on my 56k), but it's also very stable and powerful.
TimPD 02-11-2002, 09:45 PM Hello,
I personally don't care for Plesk. But yes if you would have to change all the dns over to your dns that you setup for your reseller account. However, if you don't plan on moving that domain into your account then no..
You people are so helpful! I have another question now. If I use one of my domains as the nameserver, can I still use the domain itself (for regular stuff such as displaying websites, reading mail, etc). Do you recommend that?

Yes, you can, and I recommend it.
For example, we use ns1.voxtreme.com as our primary nameserver, yet http://www.voxtreme.com is our main website - using the domain for a site and a nameserver has no detrimental effect.

EDIT:
I just realised that this _may_ break some forum rules - I was using our domain as an example, and not trying to advertise. Feel free to remove my post if it does violate the rules
