View Full Version : Desperate need of a new host
Careyb 11-29-2000, 11:46 PM I need help from the brain trust, or an offer from a respectable host. I've had major problems with my current host (DirectLink.net) and have to move, along with a few resold accounts.
I had decided on Webexpose but they never answered my e-mail and 2 days after I sent it I see that they are no longer accepting new clients. Oh well, better known now than later.
I looked at CrystalTech which has been recommended a number of times on this board and was excited to see that resellers can earn a 90 cent commission on their 2nd account! Is that right? 29.95 x 3%? And although they offer the first month of hosting free, the setup charge ranges from $20 to $80, oddly enough the exact same as the first month's fee.
So, I need some more help. It's got to be an NT host because of some ASP things I gotten bitten with.
I don't need a lot of space (50 - 100 meg should do)
Bandwidth will range from 1 to 6 gig per site per month.
I do need odbc but I can do a dsn less connection if needed.
Access is fine for now, maybe SQL late next year.
I would like the option of a shared SSL (without popups).
I will need to be able to use my own SSL in the future.
Web Trends would be good, raw log files are mandatory.
I've never called support for help with scripts, html, or web design but when I call and say the pop server is kicking back my mail or the site is down I expect a response ASAP (This is why I'm looking for a new host)
I'm currently looking at virtualvision and frontserve. Has anyone had any experience with them? Any other suggestions?
Offers?
Thanks.
Hosts can send offers to carey@katek.com
one of my best friends uses frontserver.com and he feels that they offer superior features, prices, and support. their web site is well made and they offer a wide range of plans starting at like 9 bucks. also they have no set up on the budget plans (i think).
i would definately give them a shot :).
i do not know about the other company listed, i have heard nothing of them in the past.
hopefully this helps.
Careyb 11-30-2000, 04:31 PM I now see in another thread that Frontserve has no one to administer their server. Outstanding. Too bad I don't have a spare 5 - 6 hours in a day, I could probably work out a good deal.
Thanks anyway Nate
Careyb 11-30-2000, 11:15 PM That's ok web people. I'll just post to myself then. This would be funny if I weren't in such a bind. Here is a quote from the TOS of one of the hosts I'm looking at:
"Feel confident that all of our paid services will have less than 99.9% downtime! "
Actually, this was a promise that my last host wouldn't have been able to meet some weeks.
Oh well, maybe I'll just go back to landscaping. Much less worrisome.
SickofAds 11-30-2000, 11:44 PM Sorry, I don't know of any (good) NT hosts. I know of some pretty terrible ones, but something tells me that isn't exactly what you want. :)
That quote from the TOS is delightful! Hard to beat that sort of guarantee unless you just pulled the plug out of the UPS.
Careyb 12-02-2000, 02:43 PM OK, even though you guys didn't post anything here (except for Nathan & SOA, thanks guys) I'll post the results for anyone looking for NT reseller accounts.
Picked webexpose; they didn't reply to e-mails for 2 days, then closed their site for 2 weeks.
Decided to go with frontserve after seeing (among other things) that they were offering $10 for every site transferred to them. The day after I sent them the standard questions, I see on this forum that they don't actually have anyone to admin their server(s). Then I get an e-mail stating that they aren't actually offering reseller svc's yet either.
Out of time (my current host went all unix on Dec 1) I signed up with CentralInfo. They have a decent control panel, fair storage, good bandwidth (unlimited = 10gig), and a pretty decent control panel (not gui, but I can do anything from change mx records to modifying the info logged for each vist. Custom nameservers $10 per month, Free DNS if you just need to park some sites, etc.
And the number 1 reason is...... Support has answered every question, before and after sign up, correctly and in less than 1 hour.
I'm very pleased so far.
Thanks for having this site. I learned a lot, even got some answers to some questions I didn't know I had.

We're better at answering the questions you don't ask or the ones you didn't know you had (especially when it comes to NT hosting). :)
rajiv 12-04-2000, 04:02 PM Is centralinfo - Ok - Now what do you think??

Careyb 12-04-2000, 04:51 PM Rajiv,
I'm very pleased so far. Tech support has answered quickly and correctly for every question. I haven't found anything I can't do from the control panel. They use iMail Server, which I've not used before, but it's been very easy to configure so far. I've got pretty much complete control over DNS. They haven't been down once in the 2 days since I've been signed up which far exceeds their "less than 99.9% downtime" guarantee (see above post).
I've looked at a number of NT hosts and it is just damned hard to find a good one at this price. At this point I feel like it's an extremely good deal. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them with the proviso that I've only been with them for a couple of days.
Good luck
brain2b 12-04-2000, 11:09 PM go with site5.com they are through VDI, they rock, there features are excellent, resold plans starting at $2
good potential for profits.
rajiv 12-05-2000, 01:30 PM Do centralinfo provide Dedicated servers???

ummmmmm......they are talking about NT hosts, did you even bother to read anything? As far as I know, VDI or site5 do not offer NT/Windows hosting.
Careyb 12-05-2000, 09:43 PM I doubt that they provide dedicated servers. They are pretty much just a high volume/high automation, low margin type outfit. My feeling from the short time I've been with them is that if you need a lot of special items that aren't on their control panel, or a dedicated server or something customized you will probably do better by paying a bit more and going somewhere else, although it never hurts to ask.
They have still done a great job answering all my e-mails correctly and promptly, and they have already exceeded their uptime promise by a huge margin :)
Careyb 12-06-2000, 08:57 AM Rajiv,
awebhosting has sent me an e-mail regarding nt hosting. I briefly looked at their site and they offer an unmanaged dedicated server, 100 gig bandwidth per month, for $250.
