View Full Version : If not RackSpace, then who?

Greetings,

My dedicated, leased Cobalt RaQ died yesterday morning at my local ISP.
The local ISP has "show up at 9 or so, diagnose the problem after
2 pm. support". Not good. I'm burnt out on dealing with Cobalt's
tweaked idea of setting up a box. I could go with a Sun Netra
box at my ISP, but there's the "we'll eventually get around to it"
support issue...

I was all set to go for a Linux server at rackspace.com. $195/month.
Entry level. Dedicated machine for ~8 domains. I don't get a huge
amount of hits, so the entry level hardware is fine.

But now... I am really concerned about the reputation RackSpace
seems to have as a home for spammers. I've read things like
"they're good, but you will have a hard time getting your email
out, because they don't respond to complaints"

So... who offers a dedicated Linux or FreeBSD box, has 24x7
support, has a good rep, and is not a heck of a lot more expensive
than RackSpace?

I think you may be confusing RackSpace with someone who has a similar name. RackSpace has the reputation for the best support in the industry, and I can contest to the idea that they respond very quickly to all inquiries.

They also have some other cheaper configurations available, email their sales folks.

And of course, good luck!

I wish I was. A quick search at google groups turns
up a slew of news.admin.net-abuse.email postings.
They are on the SPEWS list (at least part of their
namespace). Some admins are giving up and rejecting
the entire rackspace address space...

Wow, that's bad news. :( I apologize for questioning your information!

This is the first qualified negative thing I think I have ever seen about them, and indeed it could make life miserable for admins using their services. I hope they clear that up.

For what it's worth, I use WebAuthorities right now for one FreeBSD server and I have zero trouble with them. I'm not what you would call a power user by any means, but so far they have been great.

Good luck in your search!

I wouldn't even worry with spews, we've been back and forth with them for a while ourselves, well actually just forth, as we seem to have never been able to get a responce from them, so while we do our best to get rid of spam when we find it, I find spews unattentative and unresponsive to straightning out inconsistancies or inacurate entries in their system. So i'd say if their blocking rackspace the people who use spews are loosing out and not rackspace.

Spamhaus (http://www.spamhaus.org/spammers.lasso?-database=sbl_main&-layout=list&-response=spamhaus.lasso&-noresultserror=norecords.html&-operator=cn&globalsearch=rackspace&domain=&ip_cidr=&-search=Search&-search=) shows four spammers which have been located at rackspace, and all of them are marked "dead".

I'd say that for a company of their size to only have four dead spammers on their doorstep is a pretty good record.

I agree with Daniel, I have heard the same complaints about SPEWS. I find it reprehensible when an organization complains about an ISP's lack of response, but then is guilty of the same thing.

My experience with Rackspace shows they are quick frankly the most professional company out there. Like cperciva said, for a company of that size, it's impossible for Rackspace to not get a few spam complaints. I'm just very surprised it's so little. I know Rackspace have personal dealing with spam directly- if a site is proven to be sending spam, they deactivate the offender's site immediately. Unlike some companies, however, they actually investigate, instead of rushing to judgment based on often times false alarms. I was a victim of such false alarms twice, and both times Rackspace saw the truth and sided with me.

When I decided to purchase a home computer, I went with Dell. Searching newsgroups reveal some complaints about them, but that didn't bother me one bit. You can never satisfy everyone, and there's always going to be a few people who've received bad service and are vocal about it.

I have seen dedicated servers for $200 a month.

I can help point you in the right direction.

I have a RackSpace RAQ.

Don't have a mail problem.

Support is great sometimes and slow others. But if you call the 800 number immediate.

I, too, have seen dedicated servers for $200/month. They're from this company called "Rackspace", which oddly enough happens to be the company this thread is about.

I am going with a RackSpace server for a project that I am currently working on. I was talking on the phone with my sales agent, and he said they just passed the 4,500 servers online. Thats pretty impressive :)
