View Full Version : ?<Need A Server :: Seriously>?
i have decided on ultraspeed usa after much help from the people in this forum.....(thanks!)
the next step for colocation is to purchase a new server. can you folks help me out on the best deals, features, etc....for getting my first server.
please help me out with the best places to purchase a server on line.
thanks a lot folks.
kunal 11-30-2000, 01:23 AM What would be the exact purpose of the server? Hosting? Just one site? The configuration, all depends on what it the server has to do.
the server would be to host 300-400 clients with virtual accounts.
CRego3D 11-30-2000, 09:36 AM Hi Nate
Take a look at vdi ( http://www.vdi.com ), they have both dedicated and co-location, great prices, and it comes with CPanel 3 ( http://www.cpanel.net )
KDAWebServices 11-30-2000, 10:55 AM Carlos I think is what he meant was where can he buy the hardware from seen as it looks like he has decided to go with Ultraspeed.
As for where to buy the hardware I suggest doing a search on this forum as the issue has been discussed in the past couple of weeks.
CRego3D 11-30-2000, 04:53 PM Damm .. how did I miss that ??,
etones 11-30-2000, 04:58 PM Hi, will you be buying the server from ultraspeed or co-locating, therefore buying the hardware youself from another vendor.
I am also with ultraspeed and then supplied the hardware, will you follow a similar suit ?
i was looking for some web sites to purchase from and then simply send the server to daniel at ultraspeed. i am not really sure what daniel charges for servers, so i am just trying to find the best place on the net.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
etones 11-30-2000, 06:32 PM Hi, UltraSpeed usually work by selling you the hadware at a cheaper price and then making the money back in your monthly payments... this does have many advantages:
1) If any hardware fails, they replace it for free, and ASAP.
2) All their systems etc are setup to run with the hardware they choose and like, like backups systems, monitoring systems, OS etc.
3) Much cheaper out lay. You dont have to splash out £2000 upfront for a top notch system, only a setup fee..
My server is a P3 733, 256 mb ram, daily tape backups, 100gb bandwidth...
I paid £420 setup (pretty steep) and £260 every month.
Nate, the method of you making a system and giving it to them is a whole diffrent ball game, called co-location. They just basically bang your system in with all theirs and then its upto you to look after it. If it crashes, you fix it etc. I recommend against this as the main reason for going with ultraspeed if their great service and support which you probably wont get if you co-locate.
In short, by the hardware from them, it will save you many head aches in the future.
If you need more help, ICQ me at 1144893...

so you think i should go with dedicated hosting instead of colocating ..hrmmm ... i did consider that but i just want to stay as profitable as possible, yet still get great support. this is definately something to think about.
thanks
webfors 12-02-2000, 09:20 PM I am also with UltraspeedUSA and decided on a dedicated box. Daniel's prices are very reasonable for the hardware you're getting. I would rather have someone else responsible for the hardware (one less thing to worry about).
As a side note, my server with Ultraspeed is fast, period! I am very happy with it, and the support is great.
etones 12-03-2000, 06:05 AM Hi Nate, I just had a little chat with Jordan, the UK operations manager.
Now, when co-locating, he says the price will be roughly half of what it is now... so your looking to pay maybe £120 to £140 per month, not bad.
Unlike other hosting companies, if something breaks in the server, they WILL replace it asap but you will be charged for it. If going dedicated, you dont get charged :)
Now that bad bit .... 'drum roll please.... :) '
I dont really want to say this, but support wise, going colo means you have to do a lot of the support your self. Unless you really know EVERYTHING about linux I wouldnt go colo, you'll get put at the back of support ques simply because as a colo, ' you are expected to know what you are doing'. The support UltraSpeed gives has gotto cost them a lot, simply because their is always at least 2 to 3 admins on ICQ at any time, 24/7... now going colo means ulraspeed looses revenue and thus they can't reallt offer the same service as they would to a dedicated user due to cost implications.
Now I dont want to put you off at all. I think support wise ultraspeed kicks the pants of any other colo service out their, you do get a lot for what you pay for, BUT.. and heres the big BUT... unless you have admined servers before, know exactly what you are doing, can do kernal recomplies, edit all .conf files with confidence etc, dont go colo. YOu may save money now, but you may regret it in the future.
Most other companies simply provide no support fullstop with a colo account, now ultrspeed do but not to the same degree as what I get... as a dedicated user...
Hope this helps m8, some more to think over :)
you are the man!
you always have all of the answers. i am discussing with my partner which route he thinks will be the best. i am thinking that we will go with the dedicated server now, after much advice from you and other helpful folks.
i just am not really sure of the price. i do not know how much a pound is, nor do i know to type one out. thanks for all of the info. :)
i cannot wait until i get going with ultraspeed.

JeremyL 12-03-2000, 11:33 PM Acording to the UltraUSA site they are not taking dedicated server orders at this time and only doing colo.
==============
We do sincerely apologize, however, UltraSpeed USA is not taking anymore dedicated orders at this time. We are in the process of creating better documentation for our customers. Along with the new documentation we are creating new programs to make managing a server easier. We are working to prepare ourselves for the growing demand of our dedicated services. We expect to open our dedicated services back up soon. Again I do apologize about this, however, it is done with the best intrest of the client in mind.
============
Paul L. 12-04-2000, 01:00 AM UltraSpeed will start accepting orders back soon.
We just need to get some better documentation togther among other things. It should open back up in about 2 - 4 weeks maybe sooner depends on how fast we can get the work done.
Jordan 12-04-2000, 10:02 AM Just to clarify, Nate enquired into our services with the intention to signup before we ceased taking new orders, therefore when Nate does want to sign up his order will be fulfilled as normal.
etones 12-04-2000, 01:16 PM Hi Nate, happy to see you have picked a gread host :)
What currency are you in at the moment? $ ?
chicken...thaks for the converter :)
jordan....thanks for the clarification, as i was wondering about that myself.
everyone....you folks are great....i am really glad that i started utilizing this forum. it proves to be the single best resource for my business and then some.
i am looking forward to leaving ala**** and getting a fresh start with ultraspeed.
Chicken 12-04-2000, 07:48 PM That converter is the only ting keeping me sane sometimes. I am *not* good at figuring out pound to greenbacks, and vice versa! Glad to help...
Ohhhh, and not sure if you noticed, but that converter can be put on your site to help *your* customers also!
webfors 12-04-2000, 09:08 PM Hi Nate,
You should be very happy with UltraUSA. I had a very hectic move from DI to my new server with UUSA and Daniel has been really helpful. He definitely went above and beyond the call of duty and we were able to move over 100 domains in just a couple of days.
I am looking forward to that documentation their talking about! :)
