Hi,

I'm really looking for some expert advise from you guys.

I'm a website manager and currently host our website on the semi-dedicated package at hostrocket.com. I'm getting very fed up with the service which has been constantly down over the past week, and therefore looking for at possible dedicated options.

The site only uses approx 3-4gb bandwidth per month and is a mixture of flat files and database driven pages (php mySQL). I went for the semi-dedicated package at HR purely for the reason of getting a stable server with minium downtime and not because the site had outgrown the standard hosting packages. The site is the mainstay of our business therefore reliability and minimum downtime is paramount. The current downtime we have experienced is totally unacceptible, therefore I can see my only option as moving to a dedicated server, where I won't have other sites crashing the server.

I would like a server that is of moderate spec which will never be stressed by traffic we get (we envisage it could probably get up to 20gb per month). I know nothing about managing a server and have only ever had 'hosting plans' with control panels so I would like to keep the management of the server as simple for me to do as possible. The server will only host the one site but I want to point numerous other domains at the same site, so I would like to be able to configure that myself - or get someone else to do it.

As I have no server management skill (and haven't got time to learn immediately) I really need excellent support and probably a managed option where someone else takes care of the really crucial management things.

Bearing in mind all the above I would really appreciate any help & advise you could offer me on both a recommended host, the soft of spec I will need and any software that should be installed (preferably when I get the package.)

Many thanks for your help in advance.

I can thoroughly recommend www.venturesonline.com -- they are so helpful it's untrue, and they've just moved into their own NOC with great connectivity.

Search this forum for Ventures Online (VO) and you will see what I mean!

Server management: actually, Web Host Manager takes a lot of the pain out of this, and VO are very kind to newbies. "True" managed hosting costs a lot more. Cheaper to buy a real cheap PC, put Linux on it and fool around at home to learn!

Because this server will be vital to your business, I suggest looking into quality hardware. Server motherboards (versus the home-computer ones) and quality hard drives and memory will make all the difference. Make sure you get these kinds of parts from your provider.

You might also be interested in purchasing a control panel to manage your server with, and having a strong tech support team at your provider that can help you should something happen to the server and the control panel can't bail you out. Your host can let you know what control panel they think you should get, based on your experience and needs. Generally we suggest Plesk to customers, but it's not always the best solution. A control panel is generally much, much cheaper than having the provider manage it for you (system admin time is not cheap).

You should be ok with this kind of server (by no means a minimum or optimal configuration, just a suggestion):

- Pentium III 800
- 512MB Ram (256 might do, but I suggest 512)
- Server Motherboard (not the cheap $100 (retail) boards)
- 20GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

Good luck!
