That's pretty bad...

I'm probably looking at this the wrong way around, but do you mean closing the 'lid' (screen) down over the keyboard?

If so, you aren't going to wish to type anything? (or do you have an external keyboard hooked to it as well?)

It's probably a failsafe. This laptop (a Compaq Armada) has had the lid shut a few times when it's failed to shutdown properly. Opening it up again hours later wasn't a happy experience. You could have boiled an egg on the keyboard it was that hot. Laptops have enough trouble getting rid of heat. :)

sasjamal, your new laptop should have a utilities option or other icon or program that allows you to control the settings. Go to the power options and look for a setting to leave the power on when the lid is shut. My IBM Thinkpad allows this option under Configuration > Power Management Properties > Suspend/Resume Options. See if you can find something similar on your Gateway.

They actually called that "extraordinary support"? What a joke. My guess is that this has something to do with power settings or a utilities program like previously mentioned. I'm not positive on Gateway's but most other laptops I've seen have something that allows you to turn off an option that powers down the laptop when the cover is closed.

This is a design feature and most feel a good one. An earlier poster mentioned an incident with build-up of heat. However, the more prevalent problem this addressed was someone closing up their laptop and thinking they had turned it off. Subsequently when they went to use it, they found out the battery was dead because they failed to turn it off. Much like leaving your lights on when parking your car.
