![]() | View Full Version : What is your favorite bulletin board style? Arroyo 02-07-2002, 08:11 PM And why? Personally, I like the UBB-style forums, but I gather that's not always the case. madmatty 02-07-2002, 08:33 PM Its really a personal taste thing. The old threaded method that only shows one reply per page used to be the norm. But now the ubb style has well and truely taken over. Chicken 02-07-2002, 08:38 PM That old threaded, one reply per page thing used to drive me nuts. Took forever just to read a single thread. I posted at FWS when they used it and was glad when it shifted to vBull. raine 02-08-2002, 06:45 AM I like what the guys at YaBB are doing. I run YaBB, and as a free source, it's probably the best around. A huge difference tho going from the cgi to php versions... php is by far much better! And the guys that develop the thing are just damned great! I have both Jeff and Joseph on my icq list, and Jeff has *PERSONALLY* installed my board for me twice =) I'm a php/mysql idiot ... so i really don't know how to do things... which brings me to a very good question ... which I'll post in the lounge section i guess? Please help out a newbie php/mysql user and visit that thread... Anyway, back to the original question... although lacking in some of the key features I need (like additional membergroups gained through posts), yabb has been terrific for me. So, just to do a plug for those guys (and no, i'm in no way, shape, or form affiliated with them, I just use their board, and am incredibly happy), take a look at www.yabb.info . And when I've finally transfered over to Serve-You.net, you can check out my board at www.eldaronline.com Change 02-08-2002, 08:41 AM I just checked out YaBB and it looks pretty good indeed. Personally I have chosen phpBB2 (http://phpbb.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/), while I had ikonBoard before (2, tested 3). PHP boards are much better than CGI indeed! So I'd definitely go for a PHP board instead of CGI. As for YaBB SE & phpBB2, I like the default layout of features in phpBB2 better. I'm not sure how good the templating system in YaBB is, but in phpBB2 you can move just about anything around as you please. Very flexible board and I like that. They claim to be the best board after vBB, and of course phpBB2 is free as well. They're at RC2 now and they hope RC3 to be the last RC release until the final release... ASPCode.net 02-08-2002, 08:54 AM I also like UBB style, but sometimes ( especially for popular threads with lots of posts ) it is hard to follow. Then a threaded variant is to prefer where one easily sees the structure over all subdiscussions taking place in the thread. HKS 02-08-2002, 01:54 PM UBB Style all the way. If wasnt for the ubb style board, i wouldnt have been as addicted as i am now about the internet. I read forums galore and i love it. UBB created a new generation of forums. I personally like phpbb2 also. I cant wait to the final comes out. I currently have the CVS of phpbb2. Being the newbie that i am, i kept updating the "newer" but not always better updates, so i've messed up my board about 3x already. The people on the forums are very helpful also. :) Arroyo 02-13-2002, 03:42 PM Wow, a colleague just showed me this site, which rates all the board formats. YaBB does very well: http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Bulletin_Board_Message_Systems/ Vortex-Steve 02-13-2002, 03:46 PM I love ikonBoard, but as it seems to be very server intensive my last host told me to take it down, im currently using PHPBB2 which I also think is good. And i have to say PHP with a MySQL database is definetly the best combination for a bulletin board system. vibehosts 02-13-2002, 03:58 PM I use snitz forums just beasue they are very easy to use and very reliable Change 02-13-2002, 03:59 PM Originally posted by Arroyo Wow, a colleague just showed me this site, which rates all the board formats. YaBB does very well: http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Bulletin_Board_Message_Systems/ Problem with this overview is that it shows CGI boards only.. while there are a lot of good PHP boards as well. So don't forget about the PHP boards :) btw.. most of the ikonBoard team has left the Jarvis Group this week and will start a new project, together with Matt, the previous owner and lead programmer of iB (http://www.ibforums.com/). They will make a CGI/mySQL/flatfile and PHP/mySQL version of this new board. Relyc 02-13-2002, 04:12 PM Yes I definatley prefer UBB, however UBB itself is falling into disuse since many hosts (myself included) will not allow flat file based forums. shibby 02-13-2002, 06:25 PM I have a pre-hacked (modified) version of phpBB and love it! Very customizable. Curtis H. 02-13-2002, 07:41 PM I use to run YaBB on my site until the host that it was not allowed anymore. YaBB SE may be better but even that is not allowed at this time. I have since dished out the $$$ for Vbulletin and couldn't be happier. :D Sain Cai 02-13-2002, 09:08 PM I use some German translated board on my site. Voltlab or something. It was a free download, although there are some bugs still in (or it could be the crap free hoster :D) The only forum where "Originally Quoted by:" is "Zitat" freehtml 02-14-2002, 01:48 AM I run a forum powered by vBulletin on my site. It is easy to customize and very features wise..... Althought its not free as compared to many, but the features and pricing is just great palmtree 02-14-2002, 01:58 AM Originally posted by Change I just checked out YaBB and it looks pretty good indeed. My vote is for this one.. :D laterz OverSkilled 02-14-2002, 02:06 AM I personally like openBB because all the features and customization. It does not take up alot of resources like CGI does, this board is written in PHP. It is freeware located at www.iansoft.com I also have it installed on www.govtalk.net Abby 02-14-2002, 06:04 AM The UBB style is the only choice. I can't stand "tree" systems. I dislike anything "one message at a time." As specific board types go, I like YaBB best, especially the new YaBBSE mysql/php release (http://www.yabb.info). Lots of great features, easy to customize, and speedy to boot. raine 02-14-2002, 06:58 AM And if you're looking for a new board now, wait a couple week and YaBB 1.3.0 is coming out! Not only will it be even better, it has real cool features too! =) No, I don't work there =)... just a REAL HAPPY CUSTOMER! =) my board is at community.eldaronline.com Skie 02-14-2002, 08:39 PM I'm writing my own board right now... PHP/mySQL, and hopefully eventually ASP/SQL/Access (When I get a host that I can use all that on ;)) No site up yet.... just working on the core. [shameless plug]If anyone would like to help email me at webmaster@sparked.net. I need a good template and PHP coding... but mostly the template:D[/shameless plug] ~Skie catharsis 02-14-2002, 10:11 PM Heh, I'm writing a board of my own at the moment too... if there wasn't already too many of these things around before, there is now :) (not that I'm planing to market it or anything; it's just something I wanted to do) |
