Does anyone here do managed lightone servers? If not, why not? :P

I know there are loads of rackshack resellers, but im looking for a managed lightone server (simply because rackshack upgrade prices are way too expensive). I need Hsphere as a control panel installed and generally a bit of 'hand-holding' (probably more than just a "bit" ;)) since its my first dedicated server.

I would but lightone has been down for periods of yesterday and today with no one on the phone.

I had contacted a tech from Crotia [I think] who was willing to admin a server for 200$/month - with a low priced ded server around 150$ , 350$ is not such a bad idea for a managed server

I can get you some techs in India who would do remote mgt of a server for a decent price - they will be very competent ofcourse

But in the long run it is best to know the details yourself hands-on , simply because as you build up a business you will realize that the control of the server is the control of your business...

It is not so hard if you understand the concepts behind the OS, DNS and Web server - syntax you can always find in man pages and online documentation; Most of the trouble will be in securing the server and reacting to potential quirks that are bound to crop up from time to time -and thats where WHT and mailing lists help you so much and for free!

Installing new packages is a breeze with all the ports collections [in BSD Unix] and RPM and stuff [dont know Linux]

A person with good IT maturity and a passion for managing the server can learn everything hands on in a month or so [ I mean ready to hit the road -mastering the road is something else]

Good luck with it...

Well yes, the thing is that i dont really want to risk my customers websites for the sake of me not knowing too much. I might just get a dedicated after a few months... but until i know i do it on my own.. i will need an admin.

I tried installing Linux and dont even know how to do that! I know its supposed to be easy... all i do is go to ftp.redhat.com ... but then what? Which file do i download? If i format my HD, how do install redhat if i dont have CDrom drivers on it? Im just telling you this stuff to show you how "technically challenged" i am :P and why i definately need a managed server.

Hi,

I was like you, not knowing much about Linux and stuff, but I got dedicated at burst.net and with free unbranded cpanel it was easy to start. I had some problems, some which I solved myself and some which burst helped me. Burst advertise their servers as managed, it's not like having your own dedicated admin, but it's much cheaper. Burst is slow often, and sometimes you have to wait more then you expect, but comparing price/service (and some promises about better support :)) I think they'r good deal.

Ckevin:

24hours? That may be a little off don't ya think? Max we were down during the mess was 2-3 hours (10-15min for some customers). :)
