Not affiliated with anyone on this post but the idea is this:

if you don't have a super-technical opinion about "how to / what to / which should" on a Linux box, a Virtual Dedicated Server will do fine. If you don't want to know what a kernel is, even more tweak it, then you're probably just fine with a VDServer.

I mean, if you need it for web hosting business, then you probably know exactly how much CPU and bandwidth each user needs. In other words, no one really makes use of super fast hardware on dedicated servers :) - usually all this CPU power is simply marketing (in general) and aimed to make customers feel good about buying "really speedy" hardware.

I can tell you stories about what I can setup into a "Virtual Dedicated Server" and the number of customers that I can host... You will be amazed.

But again, if you want to feel good about yourself, get a dedicated server ;)

I am not a customer here - though I have tested their service for a week. From what I have seen I would recommend them (though the support response perhaps will not answer a couple of your questions which is common in the web hosting business) ;)

If you need more info (general info or my opinion on Virtual Dedicated Servers) I'd be glad to give them to you.

Was supposed to be a happy comment :) Didn't mean to offend.

3 clients are really too few... You can put multiple times this number into a Virtual Dedicated Server easily.

I have around 20 web hosting clients right now, and I am thinking of either getting a dedicated server or VDS. I know that you also provide dedicated server. Any suggestions on which is more better for me.

Our VDS basic plan is good enough for more than 100 clients if you only need 1 IP.
Our VDS advanced plan allows for multiple IPs and direct hardware access.

How many IP you need?

What the prices will be when the VDS offers end?

Will the price be the same as long as a client stays with you?

thank you.

Sebulba (and everyone else)
I've just change from a dedicated server with Fasthosts (don't laugh! - the dedicated service is better than their shared hosting) at £100 per month (approx $140), to the VDS basic at $49, and I get more disk space, more traffic allowance, and I'm pleased to say, better support.

Diginode have gone out of their way to be helpful, and the server is good.

One word of advice - when you get the server, virtually all of the services are switched off, so if you don't know what you doing, be prepared for some work to get things working Eg, PHP is installed but turned off, and boy, did it take me a long time to figure out how to get it working. Yes, I could have called support, but I like to give myself a challenge - I find that I learn more from figuring it out myself.

All in all, I can whole-heartedly recommend Diginode...

Regards,
Andy

I've try diginode's VDS and its good(root capability almost equal a dedi), the only problem we didn't sign-up is that they don't provide any help, guide, docs on the Webcp Webhosting/Reseller Control Panel they installed in the system. We are used to easy-to-use or at less documented reseller tools like cpanel - this save us time to configure the system everytime we need to set up a hosting account or even the need to write our own admin panel. I believe this is a critical factor for ppl that rent VDS/VM for reselling hosting to their clients.

Hope they buck up on this the next time i see their offer.

That's true, webcp is atrocious in terms of documentation.

However, webmin is installed, which is pretty good, although not for the beginner!

i was wondering if anyone has gone w/ diginode and what their experience was. i'm interested in the vds package but my dad has doubts about the 'virtual' drives and how many of my visitors will be slowed down or kicked out because of the fact that almost everything is shared (a server, a hard drive etc.)

i've been trying to talk him into letting me sign up but i don't have all the answers he's looking for.

he's going to look @ the site tomorrow and i'll suggest he emails the support team and ask them some questions but i'd like an opinion from someone who's already signed up.

please respond asap - i have to make a move by wed.

Aaliyah, I haven't used diginode, though they are on my short list of VDS accounts... Spoke to them and they seem friendly and to known their stuff....

btw, nice site you have there...

I wouldn't be too worried about the fact that it's a VDS account... it's definetely a step up from a shared hosting account.... Of course if your dad is in a good mood, then you could always get a real dedicated server :).

btw. why the hurry?

Oh, yeah, I'd like to hear people's experiences with diginode as well...

thanks, dhabets :) most people judge my site by the name before they even look @ what it contains...

i'm currently at liquidweb (really good btw. i've been with them over a year and i was only down once because of a mix up with my credit information) and i'm at 340mb out of 500. i've never gone over 10gb of bandwidth - but i want to have my video files on my site so i need a lot more space. (plus i have to move before they charge me for next month - if i stay another month i'll definitely go over 500mb)

i also own 5 other domains and i'm paying $10/month for 200mb for two and i have one at phpwebhosting and 2 others aren't even opened cause i don't want to pay to host them.

right now - i'm paying over $60/month for those 4 sites alone so i thought moving to vds would be best for me to have all my sites on one server - paying one bill. and it doesn't hurt that the bill would be $50/month.

i know nothing about dedicated servers - and my dad isn't willing to shell out over $100/month when i get no money back from my sites - so i thought vds would be the best way to go (and it's a way for me to learn about servers so i can one day get my own).

he's going to check out the diginode site tomorrow so i'll mention what i've heard from here and keep my fingers crossed...

thanks sebulba. hopefully i'll be testing it out this week. :)
