Just wondering what kind of traffic WebHostingTalk gets...

Matt? Moderators-cum-Administrators? Mighty head geek?

Only curiousity... nothing more.

Just don't visit the forums for a day then come back and search for new posts.

Next count up how many posts there are that are new and do [new posts] X 2

Then cound up all the replies of the new posts [new replies] X 2

Next count up all the views of the thread and do [views] X [new TOPICS]

Then add them up and you'll have your answer :)

Over 1,000 page views a day. Approximately 9gb traffic.

That doesn't add up, it means each page is 9Mb??? Or is that 9Gb monthly?

Wow -- that's a lot of GBs for that amount of traffic! Our forum averages 4,500-5,300 page views per day. The entire website averages 7,400-8,000 PVs/day, and our transfer rate is less than 1.5gb/week.

As all of you know, WHT currently carries no advertising to assist in the support of bandwidth costs.

I am therefore suggesting that all visitors set text size in their browsers to "smallest" to conserve bandwidth.

I downloaded the WHT banner and easily took 2k out of it without any noticable difference....that's what i'd do.

If you'd like to conserve bandwidth, then switch off your images while surfing WHT.

IE - 'Tools' --> 'Internet Options' - scroll down and uncheck 'Display Images'.

Netscape - 'Edit' --> Preferences - Advanced - uncheck Images.

I do so out of necessity to keep my cable download limit under 500MB (thankfully that restriction's lifted on Friday) but my pages do appear about 1.5 times faster (and it's lightning quick now). Try it ;)

In addition to setting your text size to "smallest" as I suggested above, Chicken, you might also try opening your browser in a smaller window...

I have reduce the image size by nearly half now, some might still find it cached. I thought the figures didn't add up.

i think the best recourse, is of course, to just go outside and play...

and for that, i would suggest a rousing game of hockey!

Thanks, Sysadmin for the skinny.

Another question rumbles up from the depths of my belly... which may be out of line, but again, I'm curious:

How do you cover the bandwidth costs and hosting costs if you're not advertising or doing any of that typical Website stuff to make dough?

I mean, if you're doing this out of the goodness of your heart, kudos! I'm just interested in what motivated you to start up the board in the first place...

Yes, I ask too many questions. <nyah>.

i am a,

Ouch. Well there is absolutely no ice hockey over here (the guys over here will think you as a typically crazy Yankee), but hockey (of the field type) is actually reasonably popular since the women are world champions and the men's are perennial bridesmaids. ;)

You have been warned! :D

Neil,

I believe Matt does it out of the 'goodness' of his heart. We might eventually see ad banners ;) But until then, enjoy a banner-less WHT....

As everyone knows, I am one of the few visitors to WHT who works tirelessly to keep threads on topic. (I do this out of the goodness of my heart.)

Now.

Let's see if we can get this back on topic.

How, do you believe, does ice hockey influence traffic?

Do automobiles move more slowly, are drivers angered by it or more mannerly, etc., etc.?

Tell your thoughts on these areas, and get us back on track with this thread...

Thanks, folks...

I'll keep my infernal interrogations to myself, now...

P.S. And, a merci beaucoup to Matt for everything!

I agree with theNonSuch. And personally, I don't think it would be such a bad idea to have some advertising (or at least a few reasonably placed commission deals for various web hosts). In fact, I'd be more likely to select a web host if/when I need a new one based on positive reviews from in here and a commission link to the host so that you guys can make a few bucks off the deal. You certainly deserve it for the time and effort you put in.

I've done my part by downsizing to a 13" amber monitor. All those colors contribute to bandwidth as well.

That's another smart move, there, alchiba! I've also noticed that using a battery-powered laptop can have a definite effect on bandwidth.

Here's a helpful hint. Turn the monitor off entirely. No colours, see?

I'm also using ADSL (Amish Digital Subscriber Line) right out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

As a final touch, I've converted the entire site itself to Binary and deleted all the 1s in Windows Notepad.

Hope this helps. :)

Spider John, that's sheer genius -- especially the part about shutting off the monitor.

I had initially been going to suggest disconnecting the keyboard and mouse -- however, you've plainly outdone me, here.
