View Full Version : gearhost + *nix vs windows + moving

I'm sorry to make this a rather hectic post, but I have a couple questions and I didn't want to annoy people by putting them into separate posts.

General consensus seems to be that GearHost is good and working on their problems. ^^ I'm seriously considering moving.

That said... what is the major different between *nix servers and Windows servers (okay, besides that they're different operating systems)? One friend said something about cgi working differently, and I think in skimming some posts I saw some mention of CHMODing. I'm a little confused.

<<Please contact your provider directly>>

Last question, which seems really stupid: I've never switched servers before (I just got my domain last August) so I'm not sure what happens during the interim. Obviously I should redownload all my files and upload them to the new host, but is there a space in which the domain will be entirely inaccessible? How early before my previous account runs out do I need to sign up for a new one?

If you actually got this far, thank you. >< And any answers would be greatly appreciated!

One week and you'll be safe, 72 hours and you'll probably be safe, 24 hours and you're pushing it. If you've got both your old and new hosting accounts running concurrently, there will be a period when some people will be going to your old site and some will be going to your new site, but that should clear up generally within 24 hours of changing your DNS information (give or take a few dozen hours, depending on who your domain registrar is).
