Well .. since no-one else wants to , I'll give you quick hints and answers. But before I start , I'll beg you to excuse my poor English - It's not my native language and I wasn't very good at school either .. to be honest I was  at my lessons .

First of all things, are we talking about linux box at your home/office or about a dedicated server you have ? If you're building you own home/office server , you should have quite fast internet access already,a simple dsl line won't do the work.

Building your own home/office webhosting server.

Assuming you have successfully installed your linux OS with apache ftp and mysql (and named if you are going to use one) which are built in the more descent linux distributions. The easiest way (and cheapest) to start you webhosting is to install Webmin.Webmin is a very good piece of software designed for UNIX type of systems, and along with Webmin there's Virtualmin as its module.Virtualmin will provide you with the basics of users needs:
A simple control panel, mysql management ,a lot of apache options , web based upload system and password-protected directories options.Needless to say, If you are going to sell your webspace Webmin/Usermin is the last thing you should think of, but if you're just planning to give some space for free it will do the trick - users looking for free hosting does not expect too much from their hosts after all.

Another sollution is to search for better control panel like CPanel or Plesk. They are quite expensive if you are going to buy them yourself, but have a lot of options and are standart for webhosting companies. Both aren't easy to install for novice, but once setuped, you'll be able to operate all in one web based control panel.I wont give you details on any of them simply because they have their own websites with manuals and forums.

And at last, if you are a programmer, you could write your own control panel.I myself tried to write one .. and it's not so hard after all ... I just got stuck at the traffic count and proftp :look:

Dedicated Servers setup

Well .. actually most dedicated servers came installed with some web based control panel.I'll recommend to you buying one with CPanel , it's usually $20-$45 more but Its worth the money. It's my favourite one.Erm.. well .. what else .. just secure it a little , but If you are a newbie .. just pay someone do this for you.

Please tell me if I missed something ( I know I did :) .. just tell me what and I'll tell you what I know)

Since this is kind of broad, I thought I'd say my opinion

If you're starting a web hosting business, concentrate on less technical things. Competing as a web host is a TOUGH market because of lots of competition, you have to make yourself stand out in some way.

Don't lose focus of the business by concentrating on a server. Personally, I would have someone else manage it for you.
